As I grew up I had no idea we were so poor
I always had new clothes..Mom made them at night
From old clothes from a barrel that seemed to runneth over
With things I thought grew for me as it got light

So many times the cupboards looked bare to me
But never did a meal time go by and we were hungery
She seemed to get things into that pot that I didn't see
We played the naming game for each meal, boy were some funny

Grand Dad said we could have some land and build our own home
But we didn't have any place to live as they worked on it
Dad even thought of a tent but it would be too cold
After a lot of thought a bright idea to the grown-ups hit

Gramp's raised chickens from egg to the table
He had a hatchery in a big cement block building
One big room, one door, two windows in front, livable
Mom said we could "make do" and this is where we are settling

A table-of-sorts was for pump, pan for sink, bucket for drain
A curtain all around and the kitchen was born, LP cook stove
Six chairs and table, then right behind was a couch, rocker to arrange
One half of our home was ready and decorated with love

The "bedrooms" were on the other side and it won't take long
A double bed for Mom and Dad up front then dressers to divide
One set of bunk beds, upstairs for two boys, down for two girls, night to dawn
Between both rooms was a pot belly stove for heat and warm our behind

We had to share our new home with three incubators
When the time came they had to be pulled out a ways
Filled with beautiful white eggs that road on warm
revolving beds
We'd take turns at the peek hole in wonder to gaze

Mostly in the middle of the night we would start to hear them
Funny how much noise with the breaking of the shells those chicks made
And the peeping inside that huge nest made our sleep time slim
Thank heavens hatching was only twice a year, even then hard to take

At Easter Gramp's did something special at least in those days
He put special eggs in the incubator and took extra care
Just before Easter day the eggs hatched. What beauty met our gaze
Little fuzzy chicks in many colors, pink, blue, green, oh so rare

In a way we were sad to leave our little hatchery house
The new one was huge and we had rooms with doors and closets
An inside bathroom and water from faucet..cute as a mouse
It was so quiet our voices echoed but we had memories no regrets

I love chickens...but then I've never lived with them.  This is so sweet!

M_E,

What wonderful memories you have.  Sometimes when we have the least material things, those are the times we have the most loving treasures.  Some of my fondest memories are from when my husband and I first started out.  We had barely anything except each other.  I'd give anything to go back to the simple days.  Thank you for sharing.  This was lovely.

And what wonderful memories to have to hold always in the heart. Love is what makes a house sing, and be happy. I bet that old hatchery never had it so good, to own a soul of love...gentle smile

Seymour, JLR, Lone Wolf, Logan, Marge, and Sunshine, I thank you all for the kind words and also for some of your memories.  The older I get the more I remember about the great days of yester-years.
