I Always Thought Virginia Salter You know, I always thought when we passed through summer, into the fall of our lives and then winter, when love lay quietly dormant, almost secret, that we would still make it through those cold, cloudy, icy days and would find our spring on the other side. That’s what I thought when I said, “I do” to you and them and God. Yet spring still comes year after year not our spring but theirs yours and mine. Flowers still bloom babies still become life goes on, and I can still rejoice in the blossoms of life and living. © April 2, 2001 |

I love the employ and analogies of the seasons. A tender bittersweet piece with your gift of imagery evident. well done poetess It's such a clever innocence with which you show myself to me |

I loved this. Always like seeing the passing years tightly held and loved. And you put it so well. I really like the way you put it together. Wrote one a few years back along the same lines, but not as well put as yours. I called it Casual Love. Thanks for sharing this. jwesley |

Thank you all. I do feel some concern, it seems that JM is the only one here that got the full intent of the poem. The use of seasons is purely analogous along with the feel pertinent to them. It really is about a relationship, a marriage that didn't weather the 'winter' and find its new 'spring' on the other side. And that 'I always thought" when I made my promise, when 'we' made 'our' promises, the promises would weather the seasons. But thanks again for reading and giving me your understanding, view on this piece. Maybe it needs some tweaking, but then, I don't want to just 'tell' it, I want the reader to feel it, so I think I'll leave it as is and see if it will prove itself. |
