TR-3 - Becky (from Boyhood Tales) It was a red TR-3, class, sex and sport all in one package. It took me places I'd never been, in reality and fantasy. It was me, for a time, an extension of life. We traveled roads together that still have no end; we saw beauty, things we wish we hadn't, happiness, saddness, young, old and all the ages inbetween. We were a ship in the slipstream of the Sixties, peace and love, heavy rock, communes, you and me…I Am! We were young and footloose, in a time of changing attitudes, freedom and plenty. It was a red TR-3, and Becky was the first in a line of dreams that shared the road with me. Picked her up in Tucson, thumb out, brown hair blowing in the wind, a smile wide as the sky, standing easy, turning down offers fast as they stopped. Like your car, she said…going far? New Orleans. Blue eyes, red car, why not… She stepped over the door and off we went. ~~~ Tuscon was hot. The sun was even hotter. Of course I had the top off and all we had was sun, hot wind, and tires scorching highway, leaving stretches of open road behind. Becky was nineteen, me too, older by three days. She was from L.A., me New Orleans. I was going home, she was going…anywhere, somewhere. She thought most guys were creeps… are you a creep, she wanted to know? Don't know. You worried about it, why did you get in. Don't know either. ~~~ We crossed into New Mexico; except for the sign saying so, you could have fooled us. That's when we saw the jackrabbit sitting in the middle of our lane. At seventy-five we were on it in no time and I practically slammed on the brakes. Yeah, I know, why didn't I just go around it. Don't know, but that rabbit never moved. I stopped the car about ten feet from it, and it just stood there, watching us. At least we though it was watching us. Ever looked one of those things in the eye? Was it looking at you…or where? Becky got out; me too. That rabbit sat there. Rabbits don't do this, I said. She walked towards it… that rabbit leaped about five feet straight up, fell on the ground and started kicking, got back on its feet and ran straight at Becky, who screamed and took off running. Me, I jumped back in the car laughing as Becky and that rabbit made two fast circuits of the car, Becky finally jumped over the door into the seat cussing and screaming. Get me the hell out of here, she shouted, hitting me on the arm, laughing too. I fired up the TR, looked around for that rabbit, but it was long gone, we hadn't even seen it leave. Don't know what was wrong with that jackrabbit, and have never seen one act that way since. But it was kind of neat. Becky and I shared something that day, and I'll bet she has never shared that with anyone else either… not ever, to this day. w. james beard, jr. © March 2001 [This message has been edited by jwesley (edited 05-17-2001).] |

~Well hello there! - I enjoy these tales much more than you know J. They're wonderful to read, and they do so, so nicely. Kind of sweeping and gathering and removing me from my day if just for a few minutes. . So pleased to see you here. I haven't been around much and just popped in and saw your name! *Peace you. |

Thank you AS, and it's a true tale, Becky, Physo-rabbit and all... Nothing wrong with the Datsun IR...I lucked into the Truimph, was in the Navy based on a carrier out of Long Beach, CA and a friend was being discharged, as if I wanted the car...whoa, did I leap or did I leap...and all for fifty-bucks. Had some great times with it too. Got Toyota's now. Dreaming about the TR thought... jwesley |
