What do you say to a begger on the street?
He's asking for your money to get a bite to eat.
The clothes he is wearing are torn and stained.
The look in his eyes show only his pain.

He said he was once a U.S. Marine.
He fought in the battles that few of us seen.
He saw his friends as they fell to the ground.
He heard their cries til there was no sound.

He had a picture held tight in his hand.
It was sad to see this shell of a man.
He showed me the picture that meant so much.
His small little girl whom he had lost touch.

He said that his family had turned him away.
That now on the streets is where he must stay.
They said he had shamed them and not to come home.
They went as far as to disconnect their phone.

He said that he could not find a job.
This is when he started to sob.
He said he would work if only for food.
He said most people would reply very rude.

He thanked me for stopping to talk for awhile.
And as I turned he started to smile.
I turned away with a tear in my eye.
This marine was a hell of a guy.

He lived through the war he fought overseas.
Now he lives through the war on american streets.
I reached in my pocket to give him my change.
He said thank you ma'am,I didn't get your name.

My name's not important I turned and said.
Use the money for food and a bed.
Know that you are never alone.
And lastly soldier,"Welcome Home"!

An honor I must say. We've done our 20. It's the older generation - their eyes tell the untold stories. Wonderful tribute. LP

I thought this could help us to stop and think of all the heroes around us, and give them a pat on the back. After all they are defending us with their lives.God Bless our Heroes! Dara Beth
