High in the alpine meadow, flat on my back I lie,
My solitude an absolute, surrounded by the sky.
The blue lupines around me, in wild abandon grow,
A loveliness so unearthly must be heaven's overflow.

My horse is grazing near me, tethered only by his bell.
He needs no rope, he too is under ultimate beauty's spell.
My body feels as weightless as when I was a child.
My mind is emptied of all care in this spot so undefiled.

A waterfall comes trickling down for all the drink I need.
Must I go back to earth below, with all its frantic speed?
I try to push the thought away, returning to the thrill
Of reality of here and now with all this time to kill.

The deer had been here all alone, before I wandered in.
They show no fear of me at all, I feel as though we're kin.
They have no knowledge of the way we've treated earth below.
I was careful not to tell them, its better they don't know.

When I go home I hope to leave no trace of myself behind.
Then they will let me come again, my presence they won't mind.
I'll keep this place a secret among the horse, myself and deer.
It would not long remain the same, if others find it here.

Though I leave no disturbance to mar this pristine place,
I'll take some of it with me, to cheer and help me face
The mundane worries of each day that is my daily grind.
I'll hold the wonder in my heart, of this my secret find.

I thought this was so breathtakingly beautiful Joyce and I felt that I could smell the crisp freshness of the alpine air.  I particularly loved the piece about the lupins as they are my favourite flower but we can't get them here in Australia. Take care......Sue

Joyce,
your imagery here is sooo lovely and well written
and your cadence added to this poem's pleasures...
I will come back and read this beauty aloud tomorrow when I wont disturb the sleeping in the house.
Wonderful writing poetess

I live in on a mountain so I know how to get to this serenity quickly, and quickly I do at times.  You described these secret places so well, and each time I go I believe I have been the only person ever to step foot there, but of course I know that is really not true.  Beautiful Joyce, just beautiful!

Oh Joyce ... what a wonderfully picturesque vision!  I feel as if you've taken me on this little journey right along with you through your words, so exceptionally vivid. I have  captured this tranquil image in my mind and shall carry it with me today ... oh how I wish I were there right now, just beautiful!  Thank you for this lovely read this morning!

Best wishes,
/Kit

I'm impressed by your rhyme scheme, it's perfect and the expression is vivid. Good job!

Dear Joyce: I know of places like this in northern Idaho.  They are precious spots and need all the protection we can give. Lovely poem.
