Desert Marauders
Virginia Salter

ominous dust-colored sky
human habitation consisting
my passenger and me
empty roads, highways
of vehicular travelers
only tumbleweeds
marching on the city
lining every median
and fence row in view
waiting for the signal
to make the attack
houses shuttered
against imminent barrage
eeriness overcomes us
we make our retreat
hastily heading home again
back past silent streets
where even leaves race
to escape the attackers
flying haphazardly eastward
away from marauders
of desert sands
home, behind closed doors
to await the winds of summer
and the war of the tumbleweeds

Those weeds can be pesky little things...Dodge them well!
