TEXAS (it's all big)

0 posted 2001-04-24 07:41 PM

I live in Texas, the Lone Star State of the South
Where everything is biggins including my sorry mouth
Stetson cowboy styling and ten gallon silly hats
Spittoons in the dime stores in case someone went and spat

I have oil wells a sure heck lot of them; heifers on a ranch
When I swing a baseball bat I tend to use a branch
I don’t drive a car I own a mare and a nag
But darnit if my girly don’t hafta wear a bag!

So how yuh like the South deep here in the heart
Where if you don’t chew the chaw you can’t be very smart?
It’s hotter than a two-dollar bill, sidled up to a fire
Our metaphors are weird, I ain’t no horny-toaded liar

Mississippi got’s it’s crooked letter’d sorts
We got our rugged pioneers in injun’ killin’ forts
And don’t let those Arizonian’s often need complain
Their heat is so very dry and our’s got’s icky rain

Texas, Oh Texas, I sing this song to you
Don’t e’er fall in the ocean like Florida might someday do
Texas, Oh Texas I sing this song so proud
Alabam's might be cool but can’t sing this song so loud

Arkansas shares a town with our mighty state
It’s not half bad to live there nor half as very great
What’s it like in the South in countries o’er the world
Is it as mighty as our Texas when their flags can be unfurled

Texas, Oh Texas all of the stories you know are true
Everything is big o’er here and sometimes very blue
If you tweren’t born in Texas get here as fast as you can
Cuz Texas is the Lone Star State and I’m one lonely man

Well you got'em goin Walt....I think you might have started an inter state civil word war. Whew glad I'm up here...well maybe I'm not.....yuh!        Great poem Walt. I guess you should be proud to be a Texan ifn thet's whar ya were born!

One of the greatest guitar players of all time, SRV came outta Texas and I love everything he did before and after his demise. Sad he had to leave us so soon!

Have a big day Walt!   That's Texan for....Have a nice day.........

The role of poetry is to utter the un-utterable; to open up
spaces of consciousness and resistance; to language oppressions; to
re-language historie

This is wonderful and you have lots of state to brag about.  But you'll have to come visit our beautiful Pacific Northwest before you brag too much.  This was a fun poem.  Joyce

Hey, Walt, I am on my way to Michighan from Texas, for the summer.  I think I would stay in good ole Texas if I had my way!!  I am one of those people who weren't born in Texas, but got there as soon as possible!!  Love your words.  Hugs,  ME

Born in Louisiana
In Texas, I am stuck
My heart resides far to the east
But I'm sheer out of luck! *G*

But Texas has you, walt... and that's definitely a plus! *G* Loved your poem! *S*

And I hear the reason Texas doesn't fall in the ocean like Florida might do is because Oklahoma sucks.  Is that true?

Walt,

Been away from readin' your stuff for far too long,

you've gone and made perfect your lyrics and your songs,

I'll be damned but you're even better than before,

growin' like a Texas weed, an expert at folklore!

So keep on writin' this witty, wonderful prose,

a poet, you are, now everbody knows!

Now git back out there and sing it agin!

"Glory remains unaware of my neglected dwelling where alone
I sing my tearful song which has charms only for me."
