I was a daddy loved, cherished and mostly feared
I had the hearty laughter, lap and scraggly beard
One day I was driving to pick my son up at his school
My heart weighed so heavy I knew what I had to do

My son got in the car it was raining and he was wet
I gave him a smile not meaning to be a threat
He seemed in concentration a Bible in his hand
I knew he read it often but did he understand

Son I know you read that book, its tattered and it?s worn
And you might even know that our Savior has been born
Do you know he is the gift the way to eternal light
And if you accept him in your heart he will make it all be right

My son, all of nine, reached over and hugged me near
Smiled so big at me that I almost forgot to steer
Daddy, you read the Bible I gave on your birthday
All I underlined then, are the words you now say

My face was red in shame, only briefly, at the thought
That I could learn from son, what he himself was taught
But then my son had Teacher, in which no one could compare
And look what I learned this day, when I decided just to share

"Isaiah 11 chapter6
The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together and a little child shall lead them."

This is what a father should be; wonderful inspiring
words for us and so cute, I can just picture him now!!!

i think this kid is gonna be a teacher someday.  looks like he's taking kids and adults to school as we speak.  hes an awesome kid just as this is an awesome write.  I especially like the part about daddy being given a bible, underlined, for his birthday.

Walt,
Congratulations on being a wonderful father...and for having such a wonderful son. There is beauty and wisdom in this that you have because you draw it from more than within yourself. You reach outside yourself and above. That is memorable, and the way I will always know you. Great writing. You've brought a mist to my eyes.
