~*~ Labels ~*~ I was going to use a background on this poem with logos, But that would spoil my whole purpose indeed. It would simply only further support and patronize, The very companies I wish to bring to their knees. They say that kids don't value anything today, Don’t seem to even look after things, or take care, Well maybe we as parents are partly to blame, Let's just look at what we are buying them to wear. They get up in the morning and pull on those designer jeans, Young women, starve to be skinny to look like models out of 17! Next comes a “label” sweatshirt with letters big and bold, And $90.00 later, we even pay for the company’s story to be told. And don’t forget that designer belt in each and every belt loop, And make sure it is expensive gel in their hair, not the plain old goop. And how about that makeup that only cost $90; it was on sale you see! At least they threw in ten-cent mascara - absolutely free! Then come the designer socks, one pulled on each young foot, And the sneakers costing hundreds of dollars, on their feet they put. Now no teenager’s wardrobe is complete without a designer phone! And then we wonder why they just want to be left alone? Talk about peer pressure! Now what if they don’t have this look? Well, those are the A+ students that have their nose deep into a book. If we would just stop buying these products, and simply make a stand, Stop the label brainwashing so criminal ~ as kids don’t understand. Read about the factories that are making these fashion statements, Mere children are slaving to make those labels; and they get about 50 cents! Surf the net for your favorite logo; I don’t have to say the name, What they do to make those sneakers and shirts is a downright, rotten shame. (A poem from a gal who tends to boycott "labels") ~*~ Mysteria ~*~ |

If you must know, I think I don't spend $90 a year on makeup... and I don't follow fads, never have... and the biggest label I wear is "This is me, take it or leave it." LOL... but you are so right, Mysteria, and I hope you get this message across to those that need it hear it most. [This message has been edited by Lady In White (edited 03-26-2001).] |

Said very well indeed. I would like them to do without TV one night a week and play a game like scrabble around a family's dining table. We are indeed to blame for not insisting on family unity from a young age. Oh, no!~ I found the soap box - so much for a day off!~ Sorry. But this one hit so closely to home for me. "I am not now that which I have been." |

Oh, Mysteria you have said something I have been wanting to say and you said it so well. As a Grandma I don't have much control, just come off as old-fashioned and bit eccentric. "Oh here we go. The old days again." Joyce |

Lady In White: You've got it! If we are what we wear, brother are we in trouble! And makeup sheesh, don't get me started on the markup on that now. Thanks for reading. Julian: I know that this hit home to you - when a child gets shot for a pair of sneakers, I say take the labels off of them, but what do I know? Thanks for reading this, your comment meant a lot to me. RMW: This came to me as a four year old in a store "threw a fit", as he was not getting a shirt that cost $90, advertising a company, was not going to be his. I think they should pay us to wear those clothes unfortunately, but just my opinion. Free advertising? Sheesh! Joyce: One gramma to another, I won't give in not matter what! I absolutely refuse to buy into it all, and I practice what I preach too. Do you know lipstick (any lipstick) costs under 10 cents to produce, the rest is the packaging etc. Personal note while on my soapbox: I love to support local crafters i.e., soap, candles, etc. - just a thought. |
