Lessons From my Past

Out of memory she unlocks him
with his sky blue listening eyes,
his sweet words that lapped,
and she was his honey.
He called her by that name
so many times that she believe
that he could not live another day
without the nectar
that her breath made against his lips.

Yes, she could live for this moment,
just once, without thinking
of what one small thing can change.
She even believed that because of love
it was okay
to torch the plaid shirts and the quilted skirts
that had held her life in a back yard
where forever was supposed to happen.

Because, you see, when love happens this way,
this way that opens up all the places in you
and sets them on fire,
it also burns other things down,
turns to ashes heirlooms that took years to become.
While you bathe in the fragrance of passion
you tip over pot after pot of boiling stew
where the children have dipped their bread
and the fragrance linger in the bedroom
where gathering clutches itself trying to be complete.

So why is it so hard to see
that the flame in the candle burns down,
and when it’s gone
the only thing that lights the room
is constancy, and what keeps you warm
is a fabric that takes years to build.

Out of memory she unlocked him
and pressed him into her book of time,
called, Lessons From my Past.

you have me in awe once again...flash fires can indeed burn out so quickly....perhaps that is where the phrase "keep the home fires burning" came from..

Wonderful writing, Martie

Martie...
So many lessons we can learn from the past, but somehow, I always forget the ones hard learned, leaving the door open to make the same mistakes again......at least when it comes to love......    This was wonderful, as you always do!!

Live...Love...Be grateful for both!!

Martie...you leave me awe of you and your
poetry, the images that this drew in my

yet to far to hold...beautiful writing...it's

Martie,

We all carry baggage with us from the past.  Some of us are even wise enough to learn from past mistakes.  Me?  I prefer to just forget it and move on.  Great write, my friend.

Yes, she could live for this moment,
just once, without thinking
of what one small thing can change.

Or how much can be lost... This is a lesson so hard for many to learn... and you've presented it perfectly. Wonderful poem!
