Gramps

A man who had a bit
of cash in his pipe ash
burned pocket
a smelly burred-up wet
spaniel an old hand-
painted Buick and a wife
who was habitually
late
to everything including her
own dinners in her own
house

to be a grandson of such
a man

when we were wide
eyed babes and in love with
the morning sun
and the go-to-bed
nights we loved it
all in the fresh and new
the innocence
the unbittered taste of it
all
before we knew . . .

wow!  That last line really threw me.

before you knew what?  Curiosity has me beside myself...should I be able to figure it out by what I read?

I enjoyed reading the poem, but for me, it ended with a giant question mark

VAS - Well, actually this was two "bits" written on two consecutive days and were not connected until the other night when I was thumbing through my pad and saw a connection.
The last line refers back through the last stanza to the first stanza.  The child, still in free fall, does not yet know about the poverty, the love, the loneliness, the desperation of it all.

h . . . you got it . . . thank you . . . e

Fading Away - Thanks so much for stopping by and thanks for the "awesome"!  Glad you liked.
