Those Who Will Never Return (written on Mike's insistence) |

I save my heartbreak for people I never get back. The forgotten touch of words on a childlike mind, just as far gone as the final blow of seperation. Maybe I once wondered how to tell a child her best friend is never coming back. However you should, it's probably never the right way. The years have established gentle habits of ache and flow, tearful laughter. The propensity to fall in love with everyone who may ever prove wrong. I can still smell the earthy embrace and subtle cologne of the first boy to take me in his arms; the first boy I hated, because it was the only way I could let myself feel so passionately. I often tell myself I refuse to linger, but I remember their eyes, all down the line. From gentle to mocking, confused and confusing. I used to be convinced things would never change. Yet now my lover, so far away, has whispered to my heart that it cannot stay dead. Stroked life into the straining muscle, unafraid of the blood on his hands. I drive myself sick with missing him, but not in the same shut-down way as before. I've grown with every little piece I've lost from my soul, filling in the spaces of those who will never return with his promise and presence and love. I used to believe I would die alone, now I know it will be in his arms, in years so far from here that I no longer recognize the world around us. I feed from him, as he feeds from me. I come to life again under the gentle hand of his words. I wish that, in time, I could learn how to say it all. i'll be waiting for you |
