I got the idea for this poem off of a sketch on "This Hour has 22 Minutes." Enjoy. BTW, the repetition of "again" at the end signifies the overall monotony of the simple lives of the people involved. It fell upon the streets so damp and hard, A sign for men and women growing lard. I walked down the street in simple thought, Just minding manners, all to me been taught. Then o'r the Hortons, a great and glori'us site, There came our Lord inside the glass in light. So all the people came to start a mass, And stare and gawk at God in Hortons' glass. But then a window washer, stupid man, Decided to clean the window, revealing Fran... And so we all went back to life again, Doing our chores, and then went home again. "If history is to change, let it change. If the world is to be destroyed, so be it. If my fate is to die, I must simply laugh" |

I THINK, but I'm not usually right, "revealing Fran" simply means the ppl were not staring at what they thought they were (the lord), 'twas merely a mortal. But knowing Fractal, your right, there's prolly much more. I think the main idea behind this poem is how badly "we" want to "believe", and how unconditionally "we" will do so. "Stupid man" you call the window washer... Stupid???? for showing "us" the TRUTH. I think that's what you meant by that. Like "we" would just rather be lied to as ling as we can feel secure in our believes.... Well that's what I got out of it.. Please correct me Fractal Jason [This message has been edited by IsGona (edited 05-14-2001).] |

Thankyou all for the replies. I will explain the poem. It is a critique of the way some people are. It portrays an entire town that lives what many call the unexamined life. They wake up, go to work at a monotonous job and then come home and maybe watch some TV and go to bed. I liked the way This Hour has 22 Minutes, the Canadian satire program, ran a sketch in which two people were interviewed about a sighting of Jesus on the wall of the local Tim Hortons. I loved how the two were portrayed as being rather dense. So, I decided to write a poem portraying an entire town in that way. When Jesus supposedly appeared in the window, everyone got excited. Presumably there was someone working behind that window, but in the fog on the window, Jesus could be seen. And so everyone got excited, thinking it was some miraculous appearance. Then someone decided to wash the window off, revealing a regular person sitting behind it. And so, the townspeople were forced to go back to their monotonous lives. As far as any religious message is concerned, the poem portrayed the people as needing some miraculous invitation to live some religious life, or any other life centered around some philosophy or another apart from monotonous daily life. Thanks again, for the replies. "If history is to change, let it change. If the world is to be destroyed, so be it. If my fate is to die, I must simply laugh" |

Yes I do recal Socrates coining the "unexamined life" thingy......an unexamined life is not a life worth living, said Socrates. Well done on the poem Frac, another wonderful piece. I was born myself, raised myself, and will continue to be myself. The world will just have to adjust. |
