The Road Map What is that question you ask of me, son? How do you get to the place where I’ve come? To peace and contentment, to solace of mind And joy in my heart through the passage of time Let me draw a simple road map for you You start out believing your dreams will come true As you head toward that goal, there are roadblocks to face You must follow a detour to get to that place The detour will take you down roads of distress Through the valley of fear, and the tunnel of stress You’ll hit bumps of failure and curves of deceit Among all the hardship and people you meet And then when you see the sun shining through The deepest of sorrow will come upon you A sorrow to live its life in your heart And you’ll regret having chosen the place to depart But along any highway or path you may tread There’s joy and there’s pleasure abundantly spread So you grab those sweet moments so delicately laced And store them inside with the sorrow you faced By the time you reach the goal that you sought Your strength and your wisdom are solidly wrought That’s when you discover that the best of your days When put next to sorrow, joy truly outweighs What’s that you say, young man with a smile? You won’t ever travel that treacherous mile? You saw the price that your parents have paid And you’ll never make the mistakes that they made? Of course not, young man, you won’t go the same way But you’ll have debts of your own to be paid And sometimes you’ll falter in hurricane’s wake And there will be other mistakes you will make But listen to me, son, each day that you live Is a gift God bestowed us to learn and forgive If contentment of heart is what you’re dreaming of You’ll find it in family and friendship and love Elizabeth Santos |

Elizabeth~ Such wisdomed thoughts of a mother to greet me this morning. Reminds me of something my mother told me - 'Life's roads have often curved when I wanted to go straight ahead ... but somehow I got to where I am today. I'd draw you a map, but your curves will come at different places.' I appreciate the tender thoughts held in this piece. ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ [email protected] |

Elizabeth, But listen to me, son, each day that you live Is a gift God bestowed us to learn and forgive If contentment of heart is what you’re dreaming of You’ll find it in family and friendship and love No matter each different map the advice is good. Wonderful poem. Love Sy |

Hi Liz, You are blessed with the wisdom that comes from a life time and the ability to discern it, I just sit here in awe with your poetry, it's simply incredible Liz, Love, Cerenity "God doesn't have to be reminded that we exist. We have to be reminded that He exist!" (Writer Unknown) |

beautifully written, as you said they must go along their own roads, but to have a mother that can help them hold their hand and tell them that all is not always easy, but God watches and he does love us. This is a beautiful poem Elizabeth. |

That's it......you are now officially my tour guide and travel agent. This write of yours is truely one to not only keep but to share and I am saving it for that day when I will share it with my children. I hope you don't mind but I could not come close to saying it any better. Wonderfully spoken and done so in the legend of "Liz". If you find yourself stranded in a storm ...then reach for my hand and we will play in the puddles together |

So many graduation cards contain variations of the poem "If"... this packs every bit as much wisdom and does so beautifully!! |
