It had been a terrible year- not a thing had gone right
I was so sick and wanted to bury my head in the sand
When we decided to do something different- we set our sight
On a visit to a friend in North Dakota- oh how grand

Friend Burt, is a water color artist-specialty wild life
He also does photos-magazine articles and is an avid hunter
Traveled all over the world-he doesn't have a wife
But his one great love is his birth place-the North Dakota frontier

We met in a tiny town of Wing- they still burn coal
Not too friendly- smiles rare- not many even wave
A town park- make a donation- plug in by the pole
We stayed for a month and explored and hunted each day

The first time I went to see Burt's wonderful state
We drove on red gravel roads for miles and miles
Seldom saw another car-went in fields-not many gates
Look forever-see or hear no one-I'm all smiles

Suddenly the land changed from grass to deep cuts in the earth
To me it looks like the moon-few trees-eerie quiet
Odd shaped hills- butts -so many colors brighter than the first
I look here and there- up and down- I have to see it all

We had Golden Eagles fly in front of us out of the dark
Prairie dogs-buffalo-mule deer-antelope-Bald Eagles-what a sight
Can you imagine what this looked like to Lewis and Clark
No roads then-for animals and men-it was a fight

We stopped and sat for a spell-listened to the quiet
Hear the wind in the grasses as it talks to me
Look up- see the open sky- the wall of the Bad Lands behind where I sat
The peace that came over me- a healing for all to see

My life has been saved and that is the truth
The land-the canyons-the buttes-wildlife-all together
I have heard the songs in the grass- this is my re-birth
I wondered if anything in my life could get better

Thank you, Burt

TO M.E. from Mark:

"mama butterfly" ...that sounds like a wonderful place and Im so glad you shared it with us, in such beautiful words.
That butte sounds like one of God's more special places here on Earth for us.
Thank you once again for sharing.
PoCo (alias cowboy) and you can ask your daughter what that means since she gave the nickname herself)

nakdthoughts, thanks for the hugs! I wish I could take others there to heal as I did. Your special place may be closer, but keep looking and hugs back to you.

Mark, I thank you kind sir. So many say ND is a "nothing place". I am glad because then it will stay open and unsettled. I wish I had the words to say how it really affected me. Maybe some day......... Hugs

JM, it is a place like no other or maybe I just needed this at the time. One of those," I wouldn't want to live there but a nice place to visit" Thank you so much.

Seymour Tabin, thank you for reading and hope you have a special place to run to.

Butterflies, my kid, I still want to take you with me one year. It is a healing place and all of my pictures don't do it justice. Thank you for your help on this one. Love and hugs

You've described not just your surroundings but how you felt while there... and described both very well. *S* Beautiful!

suthern, thank you. To me, it is my soul- saving place on earth. Hard to discribe. I just hope that if the time comes, every one can find that place.
