Digging up the Truth (a rewrite) From the ashes of the past, the breeze has blown around, and unearthed a smoldering shadow that was locked within the ground. His life had been covered with a casual colored hood, until the burning look back, when the hurt he understood. He wrote a letter to her, of love that’s lasting still, said he knew the pain he’d caused her, all the years she took to heal. He shouldered all the blaming, with his letter told her true that his life had come full circle, his words were, I love you. Liquor had been his mistress, she slept with him each night, curled softly, liquid charm had eased life’s bitter bite. The time with their three kids was lost within a hazy beam from the bottle that lay beside him, for the need he’d sold his dream. Now, years and time have trickled, poor health opened his eyes, he sees what he was lacking with his drunken life of lies. The first time she’d believed him in all the years they’d had was the day she read the letter telling tears that he had bled. She could not say she hates him, no, this she never could, she saw his bitter spirit and she thought she understood. The hope she felt in reading what so many years concealed was that this same man had learned from the mistakes he now revealed. Her respect that slowly died then so many years before was reborn in the telling, and opening of truth’s door. |

Oh my, what a revelation has been had. I so want to know how it turns out for both. this is a powerful piece from a writer with a great struggle and decision to make. Powerful is almost an understatement. |

Martie, many people, too hurt by what a bottle has done to a relationship, would not be able to see the truth and forgive....they should read this poem. |

Excellent writing, Martie. It's a shame for all the lost years filled with pain, but it's wonderful that he was finally able to see the reality of the past. |

Incredible writing, Martie... and I think you speak a truth that applies whatever the "mistress" is... the respect only breathes again when the wrong is admitted. |
