This prairie where I walk today, Once beckoned folks from far away. I think about the women then, Who sacrificed to join their men And travel westward, stoically, To live among the rolling sea Of growing grass, in homes of sod And in the prayers they sent to God, What did they ask for above all? A home without an earthen wall? Another child? A softer life And strength to be a homestead wife? Enough to eat, a neighbor who Would lend a hand, as women do. How did they stand the lonliness? Like women everywhere, I guess. God gave them faith to face each day And bear the trials that came their way! Previously published on bravenet.com and The Poetic Link Betty Lou Hebert |

Short, simple yet extremely profound! It almost makes one want the tiniest inkling of that true experience just to be a part of something wondrously big. What an adventure, yet what hardship and what valor did they bring to the pioneer life. Faith surely must have been their only sinew. |

Dear Joyce: Thanks. I know you've read it before. I have always liked it. I suppose because of tales in my family of the pioneer women who came before me. Betty Lou Hebert |

VAS: Thanks so much for your comments. I like to think that most women could do what the pioneer women did, if called upon to do so. What do you think? Betty Lou Hebert |
