In Defense Of Poetry

You claim that poetry is overrated, that words are only words -
to hold this marvel in such high esteem is foolish and obsurd,
you've tried to silence my voice,
travelled miles to diminish my freedom of choice,
you've thrown my muse into your fire,
punctured the ink of my pen to dry my desire,
you've closed your mind, found haven in ignorance
but, I insist that it's a gift from God, this wonder of expression is the kiss of bliss -
yes, the cadence of sonnet and senryu awakens my every sense,
I sail upon butterfly breath to truth, ride the dark ocean waves to weep...
poetry gives me precious release, it uplifts my soul, it brings me peace,
still, you carelessly laugh at it's value, disregard every line
it may not be your love, but, respect that it is mine,
I proclaim that I shall remain devoted to verse - I will defend to the very end
to the one who has never betrayed my heart - this most endearing friend,
you scoff at my passion, simply because it isn't your cup of tea,
but, you must realize that poetry sets me free...
it is a cherished treasure, it is my destiny,
only when you feel it's power, revel in it's beauty
will you begin to understand me

What I like about this is the way you blurr the lines between Poetry and You...towards the end the two become indistinguishable...truely, this is how it is with us Poets. By doing so, your beautifully written "defense" becomes a defense not only of poetry, but also of your love for poetry...a defense for your being...who you are. I think that this transforms a mere defense of poetry into something much grander, more significant, and powerful. Well done...enjoyed immensely!

I love this poem Melis!!!!
and yes...those who dont write or relate
dont understand ...
BUT we should NEVER have to justify our need nor love of poetry...
you have captured both the struggle and the release here well.
very well done poetess
an empowering verse of inspire and taking back something no one has the right to try to deny.

who loves me with the innocence of a child.

Your rage and frustration tumble down the page in an avalanche, engulfing me with your conviction, how can anyone fail to see your resolve and dedication, its like asking the sun not to shine. Well written, I for one am converted.

Regards my friend,
Olias.

Thank you so much Jellybean King, Karilea, Janet Marie and Olias - I adored your replies and agree so deeply!

I wrote this poem last night in response to a friend's insensitive comment about poetry and why I love it so much.

People who don't write, read or understand poetry, fail to understand the power of it upon the soul~

You know I used to think such things about poetry. But somehow I began to write and see it as how you decribe it to be, I think that this is beauifully written and have right to it's defense

Don't ever give in, if you do you've lost everything you've ever had and everything you hope to gain, but if you carry on your already winning.

Oh how I can relate to your feelings! Don't you just love responses like, "It rhymes" when you've penned an important feeling in poetic form to someone you love. My husband always says, "It's long." Sometimes I reread to make sure I actually did have my heartfelt message in there.
Thanks for sharing this,
Rae
