Pounding waves on rocky shore, In the distance heathered moor, Sailors quaff their pints of ale, 'Til once again, sail ocean's swale. Longboats tied down at the docks, When comes the call, ship on the rocks, Man the oars mates, pull as one, Men will die, 'fore night is done. Rolling, tossing, drenched with spray, While on the shore, the women pray, A hundred yards, she lies astern, Row my maties, muscles burn. On schooner's deck, a huddled crew, While from the north, a force wind blew, Sails are rent, from norther's gale, Few would live, to tell night's tale. Neptune rises from the waves, Pulls ship and crew to watery graves, A hundred yards, so near, so far, Beneath the sea, sinks schooner's spar. Row my maties, muscles burn, As to the shore, the longboats turn, Rolling, tossing, in the swale, While back on land the widows wail. In the tavern, day is done, Sailors grieve, the sea has won, Quaffing pints of Guiness ale, 'Til once again, sail ocean's swale. [This message has been edited by Mike (edited 01-15-2001).] |

As a child of the sea, and one who is now and has always lived in fishing villages, I must tell you that this is magnificent!! It portrays the sailor's life expertly, and is a great pleasure to read!! Write on! -<--<--{(@ |

This is good. It reminds me of The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot. |

Mike, I feel drenched, this seemed so real. What a poem! "I walked beside the evening sea and dreamed a dream that could not be." George William Curtis |

Hope you don't mind me slipping in here to tell you how grand I believe this poem to be. It's not every day I am treated to such a dramatic seafaring tale, especially one as musical as this. (wonderful vocabulary, by the way ~ how often do we find "quaff" and "swale" used so imaginatively?) Be good (o: Claire Could a greater miracle take place than for us to look through each other's eyes for an instant?......Henry David Thoreau |
