I walk along the rocky shoreline
As far as I can see up the hill
Lush green grass grows
It flows as the breeze blows gently

After studying the ocean
Where generations
Have earned their living
On the peaceful waters

I start to climb the hillside
About halfway up
I see the outline of a castle
Gracing the horizon

The stones of gray
Fit together perfectly
As they have for centuries
On the vast countryside

I’m enchanted by the beauty
Which seems to surround me
Singing the sweet lullaby
Of the Emerald Isle

Who could even imagine
A land filled with conflict
Soldiers and horses
Scouring the hills

Brother against brother
In a fight to the finish
Spurned on by the king
Hungry for more power

Then famine swept
Throughout the fields
As many as a million died
From disease and starvation

My mind cannot fathom
What this land has seen
It can only absorb
The wonder surrounding me now

wow, you've painted such a picture

Don't ever give in, if you do you've lost everything you've ever had and everything you hope to gain, but if you carry on your already winning.

Such a beautiful place with a history that's not so pretty.
Amazing to think about what that place has endured and survived.

Great description of this beautiful and intriguing place LW!

Simply breathtaking, Lone Wolf. It's hard to imagine that such heartache could exist amidst all that beauty. But, I guess that is the way of life, everywhere, isn't it? Great poem!

A beautiful portrayal of Ireland, then and now ( southern ) ... the further north you go ... you can realize her history is real, though her beauty is timeless

nicely written

Kathleen . . . I think YOU'RE the judge!!! ROFL. Thank you!!

Mysteria . . . Thank you much. It's always fun to do a challenge I think.

Kit . . . Just how I see it. I think the beauty of the green hills is unrivaled. Thanks!

Moon Dust . . . Thanks!

Irie . . . True, the history there is far from pretty and I could have gone on and on about it, but I wanted to focus on the beauty. That is what always shines through.

Denise . . . Yes, that is life everywhere. It is a shame the such heartache has to exist anywhere. Thank you.

Sven . . . Thanks, you know I've always liked Ireland.

Rex . . . The beauty is the best part I think. Thanks!
