Simpler Times
Virginia Salter

copper-brown colored cars
were never to m’ likin’
that is
until that ‘56 Chevy
spun around the corner
glistening in the sunlight
of early afternoon

I was mesmerized as I saw dice-
dice, white fuzzy dice,
hanging from the rearview mirror
dangling memories in front of me

sick with nostalgia
a lump in my throat
it sorely amazed me,
no foolin’!

never was privy
to havin’ one
only gazed at them
even, admittedly, coveting them
in my adolescent years

now, mind you,
I’d never have want
to return
to the likes of adolescence
once through that
was quite enough

but like the Israelites,
on their Wilderness Trail,
I have a bit of amnesia
about the truth of those days
feelin’ like they were simpler times
more joyful times

times with lots of future
and lots of hope ahead of me
my whole life
just waiting

so, now,
when there’s likely
much more behind me,
in years,
than ahead,
it’s easy to feel a desire
to go back
just a little

hop in that Chevy
with its
occupants,
who seem tickled pink
at their conveyance,
and tool around town with them
on this glorious
sunny afternoon
where a patch of blue
the size of Texas
glistens overhead

There were simpler times. I remember them too. The feeling of riding my bike still lives on and I'd give anything to be able to do it again and feel like that kid (you know the one we were so anxious to grow up from). So loved this!

This is utterly truly outstanding, it brings memories of youthful innocence. (Was I ever that young and innocent? I must have been!)
How I love this truly fabulous writing. Really good work, back to the top you go
Take care love as always

This is absolutely the greatest!! Such wonderful memories it brings back, of my girlfriend's Chevy, complete with fuzzy dice and a souped-up engine to catch the eyes of the boys along the way!! What fun we had on weekends.......
Thanks for the memories!!

Live...Love...Be grateful for both!!

Thanks so much, Mushy! And that's quite a star, dancing and laughing and all.

And Sunnyone, it's certainly easy to see how you got the name Sunnyone. What a delightful comment! Glad you enjoyed and those memories to reinforce your enjoyment.

Curious, James Michael, were you on the mainland then? Is Kapolei the name of one of the islands or an area on one of the larger islands? I've not heard of that one. I've only been on Oahu.
