Gregory Street

She rode a pink and white bicycle
Every summer day, down Gregory
Pony tail with a blue stripped ribbon
I remember that little smile of Jessica….

Well paradise isn't here, anymore
And the suburbs just ain't that pretty
Not without that innocent little smile
Not without them playing on Gregory

We all moved to a sleepy little street
Some place away from the fear, the hate
Some place where neighbors still waved
A place of hope, a place like Gregory Street

The leaves have all fallen, in autumn winds
And there's no children playing in the piles
Cause paradise isn't here, not anymore
And nobody sleeps soundly on Gregory…

And nobody sleeps soundly on Gregory,
since Jessica found daddy's loaded gun.

Oh James such a sad ending, so much truth in it though. Our streets once havens, now it seems they are no longer safe.

How sad. This is my main reason why I fight with my husband about getting a gun. I have four children, and they always know how to find them.
A sad, but beautiful poem.

With the word, I am mighty, with the pen I am free..

Parker~ this is very sad, to say the least......her parents should have been more responsible, and taught her gun safety.......I grew up with several guns in my home. My father took the time to teach me respect for what a gun can do.........and how to use one very well, if my life depended upon it. A gun is NEVER a toy or to be left carelessly lying around where a child has easy access to it, however, I do believe we should TEACH our children and have the ability to keep our homes safe. My brother and I never, not even one time "played" with a gun. EVER.

Very important message you have here dear friend, sure to stir a lot of emotions.   -SEA

Tracie, all too often its the innocent that are gone for our mistakes. Thanks for replying.

dragonpoe, the concept can be very scary... thanks for replying.

SEA, your parents are probably the exception and that is the sad truth. Thanks for replying sweetie.

Sunshine, thanks for replying....

Gregory could be any suburban paradise, this poem is not about gun controls, I guess its just about the serpent in all our eden's.

What an powerful twist this poem takes at the end. This made me take pause and think about all those parents who believe they've hidden a gun. WEll done, my friend

James, wow, the twist at the end was a real shocker, I didnt expect it at all. It is so sad and so tragic isnt it?

Well Done

Liz, thank you. I'm sure most of us don't take enough pre-cautions for most danerous things in life.

dg, yes same same..

Maree, i guess its those twists that wake us up suddenly... and usually too late.

Marina, thanks.

Nate, Jessica is just an example of what happens all over the world with dangerous... I am happy to say, this did not happen on my Gregory street, atleast to my knowledge. Gregory is still a sleepy street with lots of kids playing.

Parker...doesnt have to be a gun...could be anything that threatens our children...and sends us fleeing into the night...such a sad sad thing...here its drinking...the kids are bored so they find some idiot to buy them alcohol then they go road tripping...and we lose two or three each summer...

Oh Parker!

Like a flower plucked too soon,
whose petals wilt and fall,
this child of great beauty
was taken from us all.

This brings back something pushed right to the back of my mind. Same outcome, except it was Daddy who found the gun.

I wish you every happiness and may you always have the best of the good things in life. a brand
