Many years ago
playing golf in a league
one of the better golfers
on a missed close putt
would replay the stroke
after marking his miss

More often than not
he'd miss the replay as well
with a near identical stroke
and would be heard to mutter:
Same guy hit both balls.

So I write about redundancy
and wonder if Tom Wolfe
was ever wrong
he seems so right:
You Can't Go Home Again

Back in my callow youth
I met and loved a lady
we'd both made mistakes
before and after we met
I loved her for her beauty
as much as her loving
and even more for her intelligence

I listened to her
learned from her
respected her
tried to make he life exciting
again

But she left me
after a year
and I cried
long and hard for her return
I knew it was not to be

Like all jilted lovers
I replayed all the scenes
and came to conclusions
I was certain were correct
what I did wrong
what I thought I could do right
if I had another chance

As I write
I know with certainty
many reading now
identify

Yet I wonder if I -
if all of us -
given that knowledge
given that chance
to try again
to make it right

wouldn't miss that stroke repeated
take that 3 putt and score it
and mutter:
Same guy hit both balls

Great souls have wills; feeble ones have only wishes.

I'd probably be muttering over another miss... but I sure would like the chance to try for redemption! *S* Well done... very enjoyable read.

I don't want to do it again
for I'm afraid the mistake
would still be the same.
Sometimes it's better to just
wonder, than to know.

Wise words indeed....wouldn't it be lovely if God granted us age and wisdom at birth and then allowed us to become young.....?

Thank you all - I doubt I'm that much wiser.
as for 'trying again' - truth told - there were a few retries - and I missed those 'putts' too. another well-worn expression:

and who's to say
when day is through
what to say what to do
so the answer could be found
footsteps in the solid ground?

or
just keep on
another day
another golf game
another play
and would it matter
anyway?

when all is said
and all is done
the game is over
who has won?

Martie -
It may not have been clear - but even though we were in a league - much of the play was against one's self.
Still - you know How much I treasure poetry and your poetry in particular - and must of all poetic replies {{{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}}} Special thanks!!!!

Oh, there is much wisdom in your words dear Sir...but do it all over again, I think not...I'll just take the lousy putt and try to do better on the next swing

Wil,
they say we learn from out mistakes
I think that wisdom's flawed
we cannout change to past out-takes
although they give us pause
to live our life over again
would not create perfection
we still would have to learn from pain
it is a sweet confection
we never can be changed that much
our past is still our past
but we can learn, through another's touch
that second love can last
and when we get it right
what joy there is to see
happiness throughout the flight
is there for you and me
so when you say same guy
that's really not quite true
experience teaches by and by
to make a different you.
(arguing both sides of the fence, based on the principle that those who don't learn from history are destined to repeat it.

write on
