Something lurks behind the face that I have come to know…
Something kept well-hid, away from me…
Something that I hadn’t  seen and thought you’d never show…
It’s something that you don’t want me to see…

The years go by and we accept our many ups and downs…
Complacency becomes the daily fare…
We look no deeper, satisfied with traits that we have found…
And go our merry way, quite unaware…

Then one day, you let it slip, and lose your old disguise…
You turn into a stranger I can’t trust…
You shed your old familiar skin before my very eyes…
And I don’t want to face it, but I must…

All these years the face I’ve known has worn a skin-tight mask…
A mask I thought I knew, I thought I loved…
Now it’s gone and I am faced with one more life-long task…
To make one for myself,
and put it on…

yes sunny it is sad when you find out someone you love has not been truthful with you...i often wonder how people can be so cold and live with themselves..when they deceive so many..and than you have to wear a smile when you really feel like crying..HUGS..so i guess we all wear our masks once in a while.

Oh lil sis, I'm sorry, I really am. Oh what can I say, there's nothing really except, if nothing else at least you know the truth. Oh love my heart aches for you. I hope you're okay, and I'm sorry I'm such a lousy letter writer, I'll send you my love, and hope you're okay kid.
Take care love

Some times when the mask comes off we find ourselves with someone we never knew. Very good writing.

Well written dear friend.  We all wear a mask of sorts at times, some unknowingly, others knowing full well; and sometimes what seems to have been a mask is nothing more than a change inside, something one has discovered about oneself they never knew; a new direction, a new life, and unfortunately, it doesn't include products of the old one. Don't know which is true here, but you wrote well of what you believe it to be, and my heart goes out to you.

ya know, I think there is money to be made in this mask business, reckon??
Personally, what you see (and there are lots I hear) is what you get, up close and personal, but I have always been true to myself, unfortunately, a lot of people aren't, but everyone here is super, super nice and I'm sure we see the fine poets for who they truly are-no masks required-signs posted.  Lovely, lovely write Sunny1-so true too, I've met a few.

Powerful piece, absolutely powerful!  But, just maybe that 'stranger' is someone you'll love as well.  Maybe the two people you evolve into can make the rest of your lives very special. Anything's possible, isn't it?  Having lost in a relationship, I always hope others will find a way.  To stay.

Oh Sunny, I know just what you mean. How is it that we can not see the true person for such a long time. Amazing.
Sorry you are in the midst of this misery.
Love you

Let me at him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  All I can say is that he doesn't know how much he has lost if he is willing to wear a mask of deceipt in front of a heart as loving as yours.  You wear your mask if you must but know that I will still be able to see the real you because I know all too well the beauty in your heart and sould and the glow that comes just from your smile.  hugs to you sis.......you know I love ya!!!

Sunny...

This poem is very good and do you know what? I think I wrote the next phase of your story in my poem "plastic you"...Look it up if you like and you`ll see what I mean...Anyway, beware of putting on that mask, you never know the consequences....

I know this story all too well, only the masks change faces.
