The Man Behind The Mask
By Richard Maxfield
6-22-2000

He always has a smile
For everyone he meets
Something nice to say
Tips his hat to greet

Looking for deeds to do
Cares not whom its for
Always willing to help
Never keeps a score

Though he walks along
Paths his life has set
Seeking love and kindness
Both escape him yet

Never ending search
He walks the path alone
Loneliness fills his soul
Chills him to the bone

The man behind the mask
Few take time to see
The portion of his heart
He gives away for free

doff your mask, kind Sir
and give thus large of heart
for that is the man I would know
and from whom I would not part...

loneliness is a sin
so allow us to draw you in...
where your heart can sing free
within these walls of poetry...

If I whisper, will you listen?...
I would rather be silent and write, than speak loudly and be bound.

richard..
this brings memory of a friend i miss much (we no longer live close by)... i love him for his mask..and for his inner soul as well..he will be laughter for those who need laughter, he will be sunshine for those who need sunshine..but he has his own rainstorms..and only a few get the priveledge of holding an umbrella for him in the storm..

for some, the mask is a little more difficult to unhinge...

i hope you find your umbrella holder

great write!  hugs, g

Richard, this is an amazing poem, once again I am touched with your words from your heart and soul, Sometimes the mask is the easiest thing to hide behind but showing the true self, Is the hardest part. We all tend to do this at times.

i love this poem.
the wounded healer indeed.
this is, to quote the vernacular, totally awesome.

"The bar is always open,
the time is always right.
If God's good word goes unspoken,
then the music goes all night."

Richard, I am losing whatever is left of my mind! I would have sworn that I replied to this...as I do love it. Thoughtful and well written to be sure...and I also happen to love masks (and let's leave Dr. Freud outta this, lol) I collect them, in fact. I do need to check out more of your work.
