A passion for the love of fishing courses through my soul. To catch the biggest, fastest fish is every sportsman's goal. To have fish frying on the grill that you yourself have caught Are so much more delicious than the ones you might have bought. There's nothing like the chill of early morning on your face, The beauty of the sunrise as it verifies God's grace, The calmness of the water and the silence of the air Tranquility and solitude are present everywhere. The line is in the water, still and quiet like the dawn.. A bob, a tug, a pull, a jerk - a strike! The game is on! Man and fish in combat with survival on the line... Oh, how I love the memories of those youthful days of mine. But, now, it's plain to see that, through some twisted act of God, I've become the fish and you're the one that holds the rod. You let me almost get away by giving me some slack But, every time that I get close, you yank and haul me back! You know the hook is planted deep and I can't get away. Perhaps you are amused to see me struggle as you play. Back and forth, then up and down, you guide me at your will And it won't stop until I'm belly-up and lying still. There's other fish for you to fry - the ocean is quite full But you know I can't break away from your magnetic pull So you keep tugging now and then so I cannot get free And, though you're having fun, you're gonna be the death of me! My zest is gone as is my strength - my mouth is really sore. My flag waves in surrender - I can't take it any more. I only want my life to be the way it once had been And, if I ever get away, I'll never fish again. |

Old fisherman don't die, they just smell that way. I think this is a very smelly fish tale. You took the hook line and sinker and don't want to ever let go. Just hope she lets you rest once and awhile. |

Balladeer, You sold my 18 year old daughter on this one. I taught her how to fish this last summer. She has never been so excited as catching those wiggly things. After cooking them on the campfire and tasting fresh fresh fish... well it's now winter and she's asking if there's ice fishing here. I told her I don't think so. Nice go my friend. PS. thanks for the edit on my earlier post. dale [This message has been edited by lucky (edited 11-15-2000).] |

Balladeer, you are SO clever! I love those double meanings, and oh, man, this one is good! You should have seen my husband (lucky) and our daughter last summer, sitting endlessly by the river, our daughter saying softly and intimately to the water "come here, little fishy! Just come on over here!" And when lucky, (who hadn't been fishing in 30 years) caught one, he was so surprised and excited, that he bit his lip, jerked his head, and his new $400. glasses flew into the river, never to be seen again! The spiritual wind that holds survivors aloft, plants the seeds from which bloom new hope ... R.J.G. |

Oh, Deer One... the responses fluttering at my fingertips range from compliments on another fine poem to thoughts of cleaning the catch that would get me banned if posted. *G* (bad suthern... bad, BAD suthern *G*) At any rate... you know how it is with fishing... the prize always gets away! |

But that didn't stop me none... I went right down to the local store and bought some of those $19.95 specials. Those hooks are dangerous. dale |

Ah, Suthern, you give me courage - yes, Balladeer, I must confess, there was something about that fifth verse that made me think of all kinds of things - that poor fish belly-up and lying still ... oh, bad Rosemary, bad, bad, bad Rosemary! Oh, oh, am I going to get kicked out of here now? Maybe I'd better consider changing this. Let me think. |

Ah Balladeer you took me back to the summer when I wet a line quite often...marvelous rhythum and rhyme patterns, they just make it a delight to read...and yes you'll fish again.. even in heaven....of course if you go to the other place it will easier to have a fish fry over an open fire.....sorry your hooked maybe she'll let some line out and you can shake it off.....ethome..... |

Some fish just never learn MArie666...so nice to be your hooker Thank you! inot2B...you know what they say....spare the rod, spoil the Balladeer! lucky...sounds like a fish fanatic in that family! hehe. See what you created??? rosemary...glad you enjoyed! LOL! Lucky just happened to leave out those facts in his reply! Wonder why? Suthern girl..you gotta stop fishing for those loud-mouth bass! LOL! If he's not attracted by your bait, he's crazy!!! Marge...you bait cranker! I'll be your chum any day Bonnie...I try to make it a point not to look in those bellies!! Thank you for being pulled in Doreen....you don't need to learn a thing! When I learn to write like you, I'll start writing about life instead of fish! Your words are very special to me. Thank you, babe ethome....thank you! I'm afraid it's barbequed fish in my afterlife for sure...and pity the fish who doesn't want to get away |

quite clever indeed Balladeer, I myself could never figure out the passion of fishing you stay out there all day and watch the water, and if your lucky catch a fish, and as far as being hooked think of yourself as one of those fish that only is hooked by the best bait not some of those cheap worms ewwwwwww. |

Oh shoot! That big fish that my dad and I caught out there on Pismo Pier so long ago...you mean to tell me it was YOU!? Drat! Karilea If I whisper, will you listen?... I would rather be silent and write, than speak loudly and be bound. KRJ |

You know Michael, as I started to read, I wondered what aspect of life you may bring into the story you were weaving ... and boy, did you paint the picture well. Excellent description in this, really well done. Not only do I love to fish (really, I do), but I love poetry when it reads so perfectly. Great work Michael! Best wishes, /Kit |

Geesh, Balladeer... You're giving away all a fisherwoman's secrets here... and quite adeptly, I might add..... You're just trying to distract them from deer hunting, no doubt.. |
