It is my sad duty, and with
unsurpassable regrets I must
inform you…
Poetry is dead.

Yes. It is truly a sad day
for us, the poets, our art form
has crept away into the night like
a silky shadow hiding from the dawn.

Poetry leaves, in its death, behind a weak, widowed
Imagination.  Surely she can not survive
without Poetry.  Surely she too will be
wiped off the faces of our children, like dirt
and other things that just seem to get in the way.

The memorial services for poetry
Will be held…
never. For we have already forgotten
who Poetry, and that
Imagination person were?

But do not worry
about the others, they have
forgotten us too. For we
are the last to remember what
Imagination ment to Poetry.

An amusing thought.  But fortunately for us, 1984 came and went without any problems.  *grins*

You can take away the words in print but not the words in my mind. Poetry is here to stay.

There will always be poetry. Whether it is in the touch of a child's hand or the smile of an elderly woman..whether it is the first kiss of a new love or the embrace of a goodbye. Poetry just is....

It is just a pretend poem. Get it is a poem about there being no more poetry. It is a paradox. I was just trying to imagine what it would be like.  So don't worry it is just a piece of fiction. Poetry can not die! poetry lives for ever! Or does it?

Effigy, Magnificent poem. Did you hear in Australia there is a group  protesting poetry, They say it's middle class, trite and elitist, maybe you could send them your poem and then they would believe poetry was dead and not bother the poets in the world.
write on

Effigy~
This is quite brilliant !

'Poetry leaves, in its death, behind a weak, widowed
Imagination.  Surely she can not survive
without Poetry.'

A ponderous thought.

I sent flowers !

oh no..this can't be..
this must be a lie...
I just learned to share poetry..
so tell me poetry didn't die...
cause I still see words flowing...
and see how rhymes growing...
no my friend poetry is in the air..
she is alive, that's what I swear.

poetry may die
with the incarnate
wisps of oughts
and shoulds
as youth flees
from the smiles of
ambition

but is born anew
each night in
dreams

an untimely eulogy mr. effigy but a nice warning nevertheless...

Well said!  I have felt this often, wondering where it all went too.
I was surprised to find out that my 5th grade daughter was actually learning a little about poetry and had to write a couple of limericks, but it gave her a taste, and with me writing it all around her, she has actually taken an interest.
We must keep it alive!

Thanks for all of your comments. You know, maybe with all of you here pull for it, poetry won't die. I'm glad to see that so many think it is still alive and well.
