*waiting at the gate* i lurk inside my doorway and the rain reaches out for me. the man with the cab is late and my left foot gives voice to worry. i've turned off all the lights; my wallet sits on the TV tray; and my dog barks at the cabbie who is waiting at the gate my wallet cries out in overcharge as the cabbie speeds away. a toe tag for a checked-in bag. the hum of moving walkway. a cup of joe and a boarding pass; a flight held up by rain. i'm stuck, so i sit patiently waiting at the gate one long distance payphone call, and again my wallet screams. i sigh once more, my new bad habit, as i hang up on his machine. i have no way to reach my friends, to tell them my flight's delayed. i hope they keep the faith and stay waiting at the gate one hour and two coffees later, my wallet grumbles at the price. same old news in the USA Today. the plane, at last, arrives. bags overhead; window seat; the fuel truck speeds away. we taxi and leave anticipation waiting at the gate the city's lights have left us. into the clouds we soar. roasted almonds and gingerale. the rain continues to pour. there never was any announcement. the cabin slept as it began to shake. lost altitude and that roller coaster feeling that makes the stomach quake. only i awake to see the flight attendants crumble to their knees. those earlier delays are keeping everyone else asleep. silent tears break mascara walls; can the black box record the fear they pray? i look out the window but i don't see a soul waiting at the gate< !signature--> Everyone's got their demons. We all got somethin' to atone for. [This message has been edited by Ethan_Halo (edited 11-05-2000).] |

Ethan, Very haunting words my friend. A unique look at how easily things can go wrong in life. Great writing. Lone Wolf Poetry should surprise by fine excess...it should strike the reader as a wording of his own highest thoughts and appear almost a remembrance. -J.Keats |
