        Cave Filled

Across the curve of southern coast
eroded time has left a mark
in caves that centuries have birthed
from rise and fall of breathing earth

Yet there I touch the little child
who only yesterday was caught
barefoot in clear water troth
that families with children sought

She scrambled up the cliff just now
surrounded by the scent of sea
and watched the sea lion’s lazy lay
drenched by salt and sea and day

That child not me, for blond not dark
she had the same joy I recall
that lit her face in timeless glee
she could be your child in another sea

and in that cave of which I spoke
some words engraved on rocks I saw
as timeless as the wind blown tree
and ageless as serenity

For I saw carved boldly in the stone
etched with my breathless watch of youth
my father’s name right next to mine
now fifty years since that dear time

So I filled my heart with memory
that time can’t take nor days erase
and I swear I heard the echo still
my father’s love the cave did fill.

In the dew of little things,
the heart finds its morning
and is refreshed.
(ee cummings)

I can picture your dad - and you -as I call up visions of me and my own dad - at the World's Fair - and me and my own daughter - exploring Mesa Verde - lovely memories - a still lovelier poem

A pleasure to experience your poetry, as always Martie...
wonderfully written...(although I suspect you would be incapable of doing otherwise...*smile*)

ooooh I do so love when me girlie-girl rhymes

ya know...when ya told me you took a lil trip I later thought to myself...I cant wait to see the imagery and poems that will come from it...
and here is it.. and you do it again...
with grace...
those last 3 stanzas are so amazingly deep.
and the whole poem is made sweeter when ya kiss it with your cadence.
awesome...yes your poetry is.
love to ya and the sea lions

Martie

What is it about the sea which makes us remember?

What is it about it that seems to erase time - perhaps its motion, the seemingly ceaseless unstoppable rolling and swelling; perhaps the sounds so soft sometimes, so shrill at others; or the smells so compelling, so memorable.  or perhaps its size; maybe its expanse is simply the closest that we come on this planet to visual eternity.

you captured what it does to us in your poem Martie, and at the same time reminded me of one of my favourite poets in passions.  she also wrote about a beach, the sea, a girl and a father:

thanks Martie

Martie this is wonderous, the imagery is perfect, the line divine and the flow as smooth as the sea. I love this one, pure pleasure to read this. Bravo, many encores and wild applause.
Take care

Martie,
Wonderful writing,
Inside the cave a moments chime
But the sea is forevers time. *L* Sy
