dress a man with a woman;
break them both at breath.
proffer gold cards with parting words:
i'll miss you and our theft.

she's very tired and pretty
in her den of tongues.
saturday night just ruined me;
it broke the fall and the fun.

she was a fancy dreamer,
waiting for the world in pieces -- snap.
so you could fit the continents in your mouth
like a lollipop crushed in its wrap.

there's an odd beauty to the disintegration:
a careful danger, and non-tragic kill.
i was pulling arrows and exit signs off the doorways,
whole windowpanes right out their sills.

i was like a stone wet by a million mouths.
but who can count that high?
who can understand hearts & flowers stopped?
the unending hunger to fly?

her hair looked like mustard seed.
she carefully brushed away the greens.
you're in love with these songs, she said.
no, just your lips; that's all i need.

pain and longing has become my fortress
and furnace. my furniture and future.
i gave you poetry.
you gave me an empty bed and new sutures.

Butterfly Slippers,
How's it hangin'? I've missed you, too. Glad you enjoyed, and all that.

SEA,
I just had a bunch of random phrases written over pages of a notebook that I jotted down when I heard them. This morning, after writing "it's been a while," I decided to piece them together. Thanks for always reading these things.

Mike
