The Dark Side of the Earth

What is man, but beast of beasts
The one to question why
The seeker of the greatest heights
Incompetent to fly

He measures on a golden scale
The things of little worth
And lights a neon image on
The dark side of the earth

Just like a beast his inspiration’s
Purely hunger driven
Trading for a chance at wealth
The gifts that God has given

The sun comes up and sets again
And many never see
The lily closed to darkness
Open up so elegantly

God’s greatest gift , a child, lies on
A scale of steel at birth
But only those who look into his eyes
Will know his worth

And he will teach us purity
And wonderment of youth
And speak a distant language that
We recognize as truth

His childhood will be a time of
Innocence and mirth
Then one day he’ll embrace a love on
The dark side of the earth

For night is meant for lovers
And for lovers come the stars
But neon drowns the splendor
Of the glittering skies afar

And golden scales won’t measure
The things of greatest worth
The gifts that God has well bestowed
To every man on earth

So true, Elizabeth. The real treasures of life are often overlooked by many. I feel sorry for those who have such tunnel vision. They miss out on so much, don't they? Another fabulous poem, Elizabeth!

Liz,

Unfortunately you speak the truth in this poem.  Hopefully one day people will see that love, kindness, and compassion is more important than money and greed.  Well done
