How Many Poets...? |

How Many Poets...? The truck is packed, the plans are made – The journey is begun – We're off to brave the Great Unknown And have some "structured fun –" Some hiking, and some camping too, The order of the day, Not sure quite where the path will lead, ‘Cept "over that-a-way!" The passenger has some idea, The driver – not a clue – As they race headlong toward distant peaks Beneath expansive blue .. Forgetting everything we'll need, (But taking all we'll want) How many poets does it take To plan a weekend jaunt? The vistas here could steal your breath – The mountains and the sky – Distracts us whilst the turn we want Just sneaks unnoticed by ... No problem, right? We have the way Laid out in the brochure ... But which one did we want again? I'm not completely sure ... The mountain roads all look the same, A maze of high and low, The only signs the ones that say: "You passed it hours ago!" ‘Gainst motion sickness gauged, it seems That sonnets are a snap – How many poets does it take To read a simple map?? The camp at last! As twilight creeps (We'd planned on afternoon) As sun descends revealing stars, But not a slice of moon ... Can't seem to get the lantern lit – Thank God for those headlights! OK, let's get the fire built – You brought the matches, right?? The situation's looking bleak – I have this sense of doom – I muse, as fingers slowly numb, "I should have booked a room ..." I value Nature more in verse Than life, I must admit – How many poets does it take To get a campfire lit??? At last the fire cheery burns -- (When doused with kerosene) We only lack a shelter-place To crown this rustic scene. A jumbled pile of poles and stakes Will render magically Into a proud outdoorsman's haunt -- How grueling could it be? We meet the task with eagerness, Anticipating sleep, But only make a canvas-draped And convoluted heap ... Right now, the strictest paradelle Would seem as heaven-sent – How many poets does it take To pitch a freakin' tent? The moral of this story is: "To thine own self be true." In other words, just stick to what You're qualified to do ... Though darkling poet you may be, Or lyric poetess, Dare not assume your eloquence Extends to wilderness ... Guard well the hand that holds the pen, That scribes the meter bold – Subject it not to pounding stakes At midnight in the cold ... But keep the body safe inside, And let the spirit roam ... How many poets does it take To keep their butts at home? < !signature--> Full fathom five thy father lies, Of his bones are coral made, Those are pearls that were his eyes; Nothing of him that doth fade But doth suffer a sea-change Into something rich and strange... --William Shakespeare, from The Tempest [This message has been edited by Skyfyre (edited 06-01-2000).] |

Absolutely precious, and should be revived every summer! Well done! How many poets does it take to write a campfire's verse... depending on the matches it takes or the cussing could be worse! Sunshine Look, then, into thine heart, and write ~~~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow |

Well now, seeing as I was there I would have to say 2 1/2 poets - even though Mikey probably seemed to be a notch or two above both of us in the outdoormanship department. If not for him, we would most likely still be lost in the woods somewhere, cold and starving and tentless ... Nevertheless, 'twas a wonderful (extended) vacation Kess, I'm looking forward to future excursions with you - and I know Mikey is as well. Sky - terrific writing! I was laughing almost from the start (I thought it was going to be a serious poem at first, so I put on my serious face). This is truly wonderful. As for that less perty face - is that really Michael??? Hey there, Michael - how the heck are ya?? Its great seeing your face again! |

WHEN I STOP SMILING...I'LL READ THE POEM... THE PICTURE IS WORTH 1000 WORDS AND AT LEAST THAT MANY SMILES!!! brown eyed girl is smiling now... later-poet gators, jm There are places inside our souls ... that have never been touched. There are places inside our hearts ... that need to be loved this much. ~Janet Marie~ "What the caterpillar calls the end ... Thanks for the fun, the laughs and the trip to the outdoors, although I had no business being there. (I was just watching from behind a tree). You're the best! Your work always amazes. Liz |

Well, didn't expect quite the response I got on this one -- I was just venting, honest! Chris: You, not knowing what to say? I'm putting this one on the calendar -- it has to be SOME kind of record ... DA: Well, I enjoyed the write, so I guess that makes two of us ... James: An adventure of the highest order ... hehehe Kit: "flow and rhythm" were my last concerns, here -- but I'm glad to hear I pulled that one off too! Nan: Not quite sure how I feel about this being your favorite -- sheesh, isn't that like assigning Seuss over Shakespeare...? Glad I got a giggle, tho ... angels: I liked the pic too ... as you can see we were careful to leave our sad excuse for a campsite out of it!! Sunshine: Every summer? How bout every week? Sharon, Nicole: We'll be sure to invite ya next time! Michael: Oh, were you there..? Well, 'twas definitely one of my better weekends to date, carsickness and general chaos notwithstanding ... and Mikey was quite the little pioneer, wasn't he? Put us both to shame he did (though admittedly that isn't saying much). I too am looking forward to our next venture -- this time at a nice RESORT! hehehe walt: The only thing I was blessed with was a wonderful weekend (and a sense of humor, without which it might NOT have seemed like such a wonderful weekend!) Thanks for the reply m'friend. LngJhn: A SERIOUS poem? MOI?? Perish the thought!! It really wasn't as bad as I made it seem, cause Mike and I spent more time laughing at one another than bemoaning our sad fate ... makes for a great trip no matter how numb the fingers! Just don't ask how I managed to cook DINNER with NO pots OR utensils ... LMAO. ESP, Martie, Spiked: Thanks, it was as fun to write as it was to read, I can assure you ... JM: I can hear ya grinning from here, girl! Course, I was just MISERABLE the whole time ... I'm sure you can tell we were both faking the smiles -- Mike tried to throw me off a cliff right after that one was taken, as a matter of fact ... hehehe Liz: That was YOU?? Sorry about throwing the knife at ya, girl -- we thought you were a bear! Nan: (again) Trouble from you, or trouble from me?? hehehe Thanks again all, you're all invited to the next one! --Kess |

Sky~ This has got to be one of the funniest poems I have read in a long time! I love this -- I haven't quit laughing since the first verse! I must agree with Sunshine -- it should be revived every summer!!!!! Love Ya~ ~you reached inside, you touched my heart, and I am all the better for it~ Terry A. Woodson, Jr. |

LOL! What an excellent story of your adventure. I smiled the whole way through. Nothing can deter a poet, for he is actuated by pure love. Who can predict his comings and goings? "Thoreau" |
