This is the first poem I recall writing. I was 13 and in an English class, the assignment was to write a poem about something in your life or something in nature....most wrote of trees and birds etc.... I've been hooked ever since! My Sister's Life Violets are blue Roses are red The bruises are new But the feelings are dead She doesn't want to stay He beats her still now There's not much she can say She opens her mouth and "Pow"! You hear her screams Both night and day The sunlight beams But for her the rain stays The tears do fall Down her face they come She used to stand tall Now she slouches some She thinks no one cares I hope to prove her wrong All the pain she bears And she still remains strong Strong for her kids Ages 13 to five Anything he did She appears to them just fine For that they say Thank you mom We we hope someday your seas will be calm We can look at her and judge Say what she should do But she says it's her trench to trudge Different maybe if it were you They said "For better or worse" that day and for her what's sacred is said She doesn't want to run away Now she must lie in her bed I'll be here for her When she calls I'll be there She knows this I'm sure She knows how much I care ~Butterflies are meant to be free~ (a gift from my S.S.) |

Holly~ Dear, you have brought tears to my eyes. You have always been a great poet, too! I can imagine the scenes going on here. It just goes to prove that even though you are young, you are not so naive to not recognize what goes on around you. I know that your sister was very glad to have you around, to give her strength. I am glad I have you around, too, dear! Love Ya~ ~you reached inside, you touched my heart, and I am all the better for it~ Terry A. Woodson, Jr. |

powerful, must admit I am getting abit misty eyed myself. you were born a poet no doubt, very clever verse. Violets are blue Roses are red The bruises are new But the feelings are dead Through poetry we release our pain. peace and love. ------------------------ "Here chewing your tail is joy" Richey Edwards "Take nothing but pictures. Leave nothing but footprints. Kill nothing but time". Baltimore Grotto "Will you accuse me as I hide Behind these layers of disguise And the mirrors of my own happiness.I've loved the freedom of being inside Need a new start and a different time Something grows in the space between me And it's twisting and changing this fragile body" -Nicky Wire |

Terry~ Thank you, I was 13 and she was 28 at the time I don't think it was alot of comfort to know that I was there but I wanted to be for her. Adults judged her...I only loved her. Amy~ **blushin** Yes I love my sister very much, she raised me for many years, till she had her own family...It hurt to watch her hurt. Thank you. J.M.~ I know you know I know thank you very much....I remember this poem taking 2 wks to get it "right"...lol and looking at it again I have an itch to re-do...but I don't think I will, it was a beginning...and I hope there's not an end for a VERY LONG time Brian~ Thank you very much, I'm just glad I somewhere to put the pain rather than hold it all in a saving grace I think. Oh Butterflies ... what a heart-wrenching poem put so beautifully and lovingly together by the tender age of 13. That had such incredible emotions, it brought tears to my eyes also. For those who write at such a young age, the therapy in writing is tremendous. It must have been so difficult to watch your sister in this situation. At an older age, I too watched my sister for many years in an awful relationship ... and penned many a poem for her. Thank you so much for sharing this with us in the challenge, you were born a poet Butterflies. Best wishes, /Kit |

Straight from the heart of a 13-year-old How heartwrenching. Just imagine moving us to tears at that tender age. Liz |

Kit* Thank you for posting this challenge It allowed a trip down memory lane that I don't often take. There is so much healing in writing and sharing. Thank you. Elizabeth* Thank you, this situation brought me to tears many times, I'm amazed to read it with an adult eye and instantly I'm brought back to that time. |

~Butterfly's~ Your poem is so touching it really tugs at my heart. Did the teacher talk to you about it? Or was it brushed under the rug? I am curious as to how your teacher handled such a seriuos subject. Has your sweet sis ever seen this? I hope her life is better now. ~Blessings to you~ Lori |

Lori* Thank you, and to answer your questions, I received a "C" on the assignment and was told it was a bit serious and perhaps I should try a lighter poem.....I showed my sister about 5 years ago and she didn't say much, she has a long history of seeking the "wrong" man and unfortunately her life is full of so much pain. It kills me to know that all I can do is watch and pray that she allows me to help...but I'm afraid I will be eternally viewed as "the little sister" and not as a hand to reach to for help. Thank you once again for reading. |

So sad. A time when a teacher could reach out and really touch a life and didn't, that angers me! I hope your sis finds peace in her life sometime.. You take care and you are a very special "'lil sis" to your "big sis" even if she hasn't told you so! ~Lori~ |

Lori* You're right it is sad, but so many people turned their heads that it was not a shock that my teacher did too. Thank you for caring |
