The Wrong Side of the Tracks |

While driving through a small town, I saw a girl today. Who carried herself proudly- Though her clothes were worn and frayed. As she turned into an alley- My mind raced swiftly back… To another time, another girl- Who lived “across the tracks”. No one would call us wealthy, Though the bills were always paid. Dad drove a decent truck to work, On wages that he made. But four blocks South the railroad ran To separate our worlds- And on the wrong side of the tracks- I dared to love a girl. She never wore the latest styles- Her “hand-me-downs” came free. And yet she wore them regally- My Moiré Jo McGee. We had a class together- I guess in the ninth grade. I often saw her blush in shame, When cruel remarks were made. But as I watched, she stole my heart- She had such dignity… I could not see the rags she wore- Miss Moiré Jo McGee. I got sent home from classes- At least a dozen times. For standing to defend her… But how her eyes did shine! Fair dreams of home and children- Were all that I could see. My only dreams for happiness Were Moiré Jo, and me. One evening in the city park- I took her by the hand… Said, “Moiré Jo, my darling- I bought a wedding band”. With teardrops in her emerald eyes- She sadly said to me, “We come from different worlds, my love… Our love can never be”. Was she right, or was she wrong- I guess I’ll never know… For after graduation night- Far from our town she’d go… I hope she’s wearing satin, now… And living fancy free… She’s had her share of heartache- My Moiré Jo McGee . Could I reverse the hands of time- Ah, if I could go back- I know I’d love the same sweet girl From the wrong side of the tracks. You have painted a beautiful picture here of your darling Moire' Jo McGee....and the softness and tenderness in your heart for her. James |

Slinger~ This has just become one of my favorites. What a tender piece of nostalgia. Great heart in this writing. ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ [email protected] |

Very touching tale, John. Well, she did have one thing going for her...a love from the heart! My favorite lines: 'I hope she's wearing satin, now... And living fancy free... Denise |
