Checkmate With instincts screaming, and flawed mind faltering, escape eloquently blocked, by your land of black and white. Seeking vulnerability, I profiled beautifully, your black bishop swiftly moved in even ranks. Rook cloaked as a castle towered up from the dark, descended to your beckoning, a game of pawns and knights. Calling me your ivory queen, diagonal paths crossing, laughing, as you pointed out, one cannot check oneself. Resorting to castling, your laughter cruel, my ruler toppled losing virgin’s grace. © 2000 Corinne Bailey [This message has been edited by Corinne (edited 05-21-2000).] |

First the title caught my eye because i just wrote a chess-theme piece the other day (endgame, posted here)... so i had to read this, Corinne... and i want to tell you, this is a very powerful piece... well written, succinct... full of layered meanings... enjoyed this much! Nice work! |

This is one of those poems you just gotta say, its great and thats all because there is way too much happening in the background. So I'll just sneak my little pawn up the side and say queen me. Parker |

A wonderful poem, I never realised that chess was so exciting...maybe I should learn how to play the game. Awesome work, my friend... Maybe you can explain to me why it is that I always find myself in a "stalemate"... except when I fall for the old "fool's mate" trick... |

Park, thank you! Consider yourself queened! Hey, thanks, Brian! Don't you recall that scene in the original Thomas Crown Affair? Thank you very much, Nan, it seems the way of things, doesn't it? Corinne |
