You couldn’t always be there, when I skinned my knee, to dust me off and kiss my cheek. There was money to be earned, and groceries to be bought, and other children who needed you. You couldn’t always be there, when a young man broke my heart to wipe my tears and hold my hand. There were piles of laundry and casseroles to prepare and many friends who needed you. But as the years have gone by, I’ve become my own woman and the cuts have gotten deeper. There are reports to be written and dirty dishes waiting in the sink and a teenage boy who now needs me. And still, you can’t always be here when I have decisions to make to know what’s right and choose for me There are hundreds of miles between us and days and weeks that pass by and many people who now need us. But I hear your voice across the miles when you listen to my latest grief and gently remind me of who I am. I can now understand and clearly see that right here, by my side, is where you have always been. |
