the Storm Twas blackest of night just after one am getting off a hard days night. Watching our world famous meteorologist tracking tornadoes and lightning all eve into the wee morn. The sirens were blowing caution my co-workers tried to keep me my lady was waiting, praying and scared. Tween the entrance and borrowed van thirty, maybe thirty-five feet arrived soaked to the skin even so. Raining as only Oklahoma tornado can wipers on the glass totally ineffective driving by lightning flash and thunder roar. Enough water on the cross streets to come almost into the door bottoms as the wind pushed from side to side. Half way across town to home the streets and buildings were dark guided only by the trees off to the sides. Confessing my many and varied sins crying out for promised forgiveness thinking about meeting Jesus face to face. Then just as the front of the van lifted into the air and control was lost a feeling of peace, laughter spilled out. Without a doubt I knew in my knower that someone was praying for me breaking into joyous song as the van settled. Singing praises at the top of my voice as the rains grew, and the wind grew and the lightning became continuous. The rest of the drive was more than even worse than the bad beginning... till I stepped into home and warm embrace. My lady awaiting, scared and worried just as I knew, sensed she would be hugging fiercely as the water pooled beneath. Thanking God together for our safety thanking God for our love, and the others who woke up just to pray for me. Isn’t it funny how we tend to seek God on our terms only making Him time when about to lose ours? And in His gracious, loving, complete love He accepts us as we are, forgives us our trash and allows us to go on... even knowing that it is likely we will only seek Him when next we face our end, once again? It's a wonder that He puts up with us. We are really just a bunch of slugs, aren't we?...and yet at the same time so 'fearfully and wonderfully made'. Fantastic poem, Daniel! I'm glad that you survived that horrible storm. |

This was a great poem to read. I could picture what you were going through.......almost. I have never been in a tornado and I hope I never am! Scary things that they are and dangerous! I think God knows us so well, he forgives us our shortcomings and is glad whenever we do turn to him. Betty Lou Hebert |
