(This is not about me.) Dark Destiny I will never see another spring. No rainbow, star, or any other thing. No clouds against the Heaven's summer blue. No robin's breast, no roses gemmed with dew. I will never see your loving face. Your eyes, your smile, all gone to that dark place, Where piled in heaps, in corners of my mind, Are memories, in hues of every kind. I will never see the seasons change. Or watch the snow fall gently on the range Of hills that lie beyond the fields of home. Those hills that called me back when I would roam. I will never see a butterfly, Or watch an eagle soar against the sky, But after bitter tears and rue, I find, That I can face the fact that I am blind! Betty Lou Hebert Published in World of Poetry 1992 Written for my sister Patty, who went blind before she died in 1992. [This message has been edited by Trillium (02-08-2002 03:48 PM).] |

this is a fine piece of writing Betty Lou. of all of the senses, sight is the one I fear to lose the most. the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost |

pegasus111: Thanks! I agree with you, it would be so traumatic to lose sight. My sister was so brave about it and I know I couldn't accept it as she did. Betty Lou Hebert |

Dear Betty, I thought at first that you were writing of death. This is a description of what it must be like to lose our sight and resignation. I think you have done a great job on it. (I'm glad this is not about you and I hope no one close to you.) Love, Joyce |

Joyce: Thanks for commenting. I wrote this for my youngest sister, who lost her sight shortly before she died on Feb. 10, 1992. It's ten years but still seems like yesterday! Betty Lou Hebert |
