The Cries of Seagulls The cries of seagulls lured me there, Where sea wind tangled up my hair. The ocean seeped into my soul And dreams were caught upon the shoal. I tried to fight the salty spell, But sirens sang to me as well. I gave up all my thoughts of flight And stayed to marvel at the sight Of endless rows of breaking waves. I prowled the beach, explored the caves That years had fashioned in the rocks. Communed with ships beside the docks And each one carried me away, Every time it left the bay. I am attuned to tidal flow. There is no other spot I know, That feeds the wanderlust in me Except to live there by the sea And though life's currents took me far Away from where those places are, I can recall the scenes at will. The cries of seagulls echo still! Betty Lou Hebert Published in Drury's Gazette, 2006 |

Dear Joyce: Thanks. I haven't been away but I've had much less time to be on the computer. Hopefully, that will change soon! Love Betty Lou |

Betty Lou, I really enjoyed reading your poetry about nature again. You describe it so beautifully. Well, you have got to know that I loved this poem for sure being a Lighthouse and all. Smiles. Though 'life's current' may take us far away from some of those special places that we do so love, the imagination certainly is a most amazing thing to allow us to return there at will. Anyway, I'm glad that you returned to the sea to write this poem. God bless. -Bob |

Lighthouse Bob: Thank you so much for your kind words! I have been in some wonderful old lighthouses along the Oregon Coast. Every one of them has such a fascinating history too! Have you ever been able to see any of them? Yes, what would we be with out memories and our imagination! Betty Lou Betty Lou Hebert |

Dear Betty Lou Not often did I go to the beach as a child but when I did I would listen to the sounds of the ocean inside a conche. Your poem has brought back some fond memories. Those seagulls are calling....... A delightful poem indeed! Love Verbena xo |
