Village Picnic When July came, we'd always go To the village picnic so We could eat the tasty fare Local women served up there. The hams and roasts, the chicken, fried, The salads, pickles, set with pride Upon long tables, lemonade, And every kind of cake was made, As well as many luscious pies! The air would ring with lusty cries, As a baseball game was played, For every home run that was made. We'd have a sing-a-long before We all headed home once more. Up in the wagon bed I'd lie And watch the night hawks cross the sky, Until it grew too dark to see. I'd listen to the repartee Between the grown ups and smile, Enjoying every country mile! I really like this bit of nostalgia. nice work. the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost |

Dear Betty, Your poetry tells of a quaint little country story with gingham picnic mats and a gleeful atmosphere. It truly touched my heart! Love, MiCheLLe If there cannot be equal in affection, then let the one with more be me - midnightblues |

Trillium, Your poem was like looking back through a photo album full of most delightful memorabilia. Wonderful imagery, though, it made me a bit hungry. Smiles. I enjoyed reading your poem very much. -Bob |

Dear Verbena: Maybe the food wasn't as wonderful as I remember it, but those country women were good cooks! Thanks! Love Betty Lou Betty Lou Hebert |
