To Touch A Tree Is there memory in a tree About the way things used to be? Does it remember how it grew, A little seedling, soft and new, Adding inches every year To reach a higher atmosphere? Then when it towers up in space, With roots extruding from its base, Does it perhaps, at times recall The way it felt when it was small? And do the rings we find inside Reveal its age but also hide The history of nature's route? As this tree grew, there is no doubt That it survived each weather change. What forces met to rearrange The forest where this tree was one Of thousands, stretching for the sun? To touch a tree, is made to feel, There is a life form here, most real Published by Iliad Press, 1996! Betty Lou Hebert |

SweetSweetBettyLou~ You KNOW my love of all things of nature ... I smile as I recognize my feelings for the trees ... you should hear some of the conversations I've had with them~ (they do listen, ya' know ?) (of course you do !) *Huglets* ~*Marge*~ ~*The sound of a kiss is not as strong as that of a cannon, but it's echo endures much longer*~ |

I liked this poem about trees....and trees do have a touch of God in them, as Joyce said....since, after all, only God can make a tree. ~sky I hope someday you get the chance to live like you were dying.... |

Trillium, It was real real nice to read your poetry here again. By no means am I a tree expert, but I do think that one can tell a lot about what the weather was like, if there was a forest fire, if there was a drought, etc. etc. and can keep a kind of diary of time by looking at the rings of a tree... so, in a way, I do think and agree with your poem that trees can and do communicate their feelings, what they've experienced, what they were like when they were young, and a life outside of our own life. Enjoyed reading and God bless. -Bob |

Lovely!! I adore trees. As a matter of fact, I hug our pussywillow tree each year when it comes into bloom. I tell it "thankyou" and "I'm so glad that you made it through the winter." Sounds silly, but oh well. hugs, Chris Poetry is an echo, asking a shadow to dance. |

Lighthouse Bob: How nice to hear from you and what you say is so true. There is always a sense of history in looking at a tree and especially its rings when it is cut down. Nice to have you posting here again. Betty Lou |

Hello Trillium. Did you get your name from The Hitch-hikers guide? I love this-it reminds me of when my son was about 3 years old, we were out walking, and he ran up to a tree in the woods, wrapped his arms around it, and said 'oh, mother.' I was gob-smacked. Trees are as magical as the sky, aren't they? There's a whole world under every canopy. Great read, thanks! |

kif kif: Thanks for your comments! Welcome to the site also. Hope you enjoy it! I took my name from the trilliums that grow in our woods, every spring. They are a favorite of mine. What a special moment for you and your little son! Children sense things we don't lots of times! Betty Lou |

Dear Betty Lou Trees are our 'life force'!!! Without them this planet of ours would be desolate!!! Only if man would 'remember' this.......trees do have 'feelings'....... Loved this poem! Love Verbena xo |
