The Land Beneath the Lake Beneath the reservoir's calm face, There lies a silent, haunted place. A village, drowned long years before. Now fish swim out each open door And when conditions are just right, If you go rowing out, you might, Still see the houses, when you peer Into the depths so green and clear! It gives a feeling very strange To see how people could arrange Every road, each house and tree, Not ever dreaming they would be A forfeit to a dam to make This resevoir, this placid lake And as I hover overhead I wonder what these people said When they were told about their fate? What feelings did this news create? I know how I would feel if I Were forced to leave my home nearby. They also must have much enjoyed These hills and woods. I can't avoid A guilty feeling when I see Their sacrifice, so folks like me Can row and fish and watch the loons. Listening to their yodeling tunes. Perhaps they voice an elegy For all the dreams not meant to be! Betty Lou Hebert |

Annie: Thanks! I was visiting a resevoir near us, several years ago, and the sight of the drowned village, has stayed with me! Love Betty Lou |

THIS FABULOUS WRITE REMINDS ME OF WHEN THE CITY TOOK OUR HOME FOR A FREEWAY THEN NEGLECTED TO BUILD IT FOR 15 YEARS!!!! IT HITS HOME BUT MAINLY, IT IS JUST WONDER--FULL. IT ALSO MADE ME THINK OF THE TITANIC. KUDOS DARLIN'... MUCHO KUDOS. I AM BLIND/I POST IN CAPS. FORGIVE IF THEY ARE UNCOMFORTABLE. A VOICE READER HELPS ME READ POSTS. Dear Betty Lou It is sad when people have to leave their homes to make way for the sake of 'progress', so to speak! This is a wonderful poem that showed a lot of empathy for these people who lost their homes to make way for that dam! Love Verbena xo |

MUSEconnieHUES: THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR COMMENTS. I'M VERY SORRY TO HEAR THAT YOUR PROPERTY WAS CONFISCATED AND THEN NOT USED FOR 15 YEARS! ONE HEARS OF THIS HAPPENING FAR TOO OFTEN. I'M GLAD YOU ENJOYED THE POEM. THIS LITTLE TOWN WAS SUBMERGED BY A DAM THAT WAS BUILT. THE PEOPLE WERE ALL RE-LOCATED, BUT THEY STILL MISSED THEIR ORIGINAL SITE. TRILLIUM Betty Lou Hebert |

Dear Verbena: Yes, I thought it was a sad event too. It was quite eerie to be able to row over it in a boat and see the submerged town below, when the conditions were right. Love Betty Lou Betty Lou Hebert |
