The Mustang Years I've come back to the desert, Where I came long years ago. My pal and I caught horses For a traveling rodeo. We learned to know the secrets Of this mighty, awesome land, A-trailing after mustangs And we got to know each band! Now some are gone to bullets And the winters take some too And some are gone for dog food With their hooves made into glue. Some of them are rounded up And adopted out, they say, But some still roam this country, For I saw their tracks today. Lying here upon the ground And just staring at the sky, I guess it must be raining, For I don't know how to cry. My cheeks are wet with something, I suppose it must be tears, Reliving all the memories Of those vanished, mustang years! Betty Lou Hebert Published by Rocky Mountain Rider Magazine 2002 |

oh my lady!! I love this one!! so sad what we have done to some of the wonders of this wonderful land. the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost |

pegasus111: Thanks for reading! I wrote this many years ago when we lived in the high desert of Nevada. The wild horses were our neighbors and we loved watching them. Some of them became quite friendly and they were all beautiful. Now there is a bill passed to round up thousands of them in Nevada. For no good purpose I'm afraid. Some of them are being shuttled into Wyoming to save them. So many eyes are closed to the beautiful creatures they are. Betty Lou Betty Lou Hebert |

"progress" for what? more people, more money, more more more when the things they throw away are the very ones worth having. -majnu |

Annie: The worst thing I've heard recently about treatment of wild horses in Nevada, occured a few miles from Reno. Three young men.........2 of them marines on leave........went out into the desert and shot over 30 wild horses, some of them just colts. Some of them were sprayed in the face with fire retardant! They got off with a slap on the wrist! Some of the mares were in the process of giving birth. It almost makes me cry just thinking about it! Betty Lou Betty Lou Hebert |

Dear Betty. I've read about the plight of the wild mustangs and I know that good hearted people have tried to adopt and remedy the situation but it is ever so there are some who delight in torturing wild creatures. There has been news accounts recently of slaughtered eagles in our state. It's beyond my comprehension. Your poem is well rendered. Love, Joyce |

Dear Joyce: I have been reading about the poaching of eagles in your area lately and it's really sad! Such beautiful creatures and doing no harm to anyone. I fail to understand the mentality of the people who do such dreadful things.! Thanks for reading. Love Betty Lou Betty Lou Hebert |

THE FOREST AND THE WIND When I was young I listened, to the music nature sang Sounds of silence whispering, from when the world began Soft and gentle were the songs, remembered from the past In the beauty of a lightning storm, I heard the trumpets blast I felt the happiness and joy that only nature brings Felt the welling up inside, as I heard the birdies sing The trees were my companions, in those long gone days Soft clouds upon a mountain top... a valley,,, mist and haze The water in the giggling stream was cool and crystal clear Butterflies were rainbows.... flitting through the air A maze of wildflowers blooming... in a meadow way up high An eagle,,,, solitary,,, alone.... majestic in the sky Now I walk back through the woods to hear the lovely song Instead I hear her moaning "Please leave me alone You silly greedy fools....You're killing me you know You're tearing me apart... Which everybody knows Your Want and your Polution... Make me sing this way" It should Never be like this.... Thats all I have to say" So I gaze into the Giggling brook... Now its full of scum Remember with a teary eye... the song when I was young . . . its a shame we refuse to learn from our mistakes Live It |

passing shadows: Thanks for reading. It is even sadder, because the fate of the wild horses is in the balance. Betty Lou Betty Lou Hebert |
