Woman On A Bus I see her every time I go Into the city and I know Just where she lives, but not her name And it has always seemed a shame That we can't visit on our way And add a bright note to our day! I always smile and say "hello" And she responds, but lets me know That she prefers to sit alone. I feel rebuffed and yet I've known From the start, no inclination Lay in casual conversation. Now she's not pretty, but her face Is memorable and from my place, I study her and try to find What keeps her image in my mind. I think it is the sadness there. An element of deep despair. She wears a cloak of mystery And fascinates a part of me That always wants to understand The "ins" and "outs" of what's at hand And so we ride, day after day. She in her seat across the way. I guess that it will never change And yet it does seem very strange Two women, all alone as we, Can't join in camaraderie! Published in Iliad Press, 1994 Betty Lou Hebert |

Yes it is strange that such close proximity doesn't proceed to something more. Intriguing. I keep wondering about Marge in that storm. Joyce |

Dear Joyce: I share your concerns about Marge. It scared me to learn they had decided against evacuating and are riding out the storm at home. Thanks for commenting on the poem. Love Betty Lou Betty Lou Hebert |

Dear Betty Lou, I enjoyed this very much. It seems so strange that two people end up keeping their distance when they both could be sharing. Love, patricia 'When you find a dream within your heart, don't ever let it go. |

Dear Betty Lou I can relate to this woman on the bus. She is afraid of making human contact for fear of rejection or fear that the relationship will not last. If you care for someone and then they die or move away, it hurts. The woman on the bus keeps her distance because she does not want to get hurt again. A lovely poem. Love Isobel ox |

Dear Isobel: I suspect you are right. This is a really old memory of the World War II years, when I used to see a young woman on the bus, as I have described. I always felt she had suffered some grave personal loss! Thanks for your comments. Love Betty Lou Betty Lou Hebert |
