Floury hands and cotton apron;
humming ‘greensleeves’ low,
she places scones in her oven.
Closes the little glass door.

She quickly gathers all her pots,
and deftly wipes and cleans.
Turns the radio nice and loud,
lost in her kitchen of dreams.

Many times she is transported,
to years fromway back when.
A dance in the moonlight with Bob,
a kiss at the movies with Glen.

The DJ plays an old love song,
an almost forgottentune.
All at once she begins to weep,
for that picnic day in June.

The day he had proposed to her;
while perched upon one knee.
Took her hand and kissed her,
as the park band played ‘tenderly’.

She never saw her love again,
he went off to fight the war.
His mother came with the news.
They cried together at her door.

Tenderly plays hauntingly,
in the kitchen of her dreams.
A tear drops from her nose
But she carries on and cleans.

Hi Junemac- I'm back, and its great to see youre still here!! what a touching poem, I read it aloud to my grandmother (perhaps a mistake, for she experienced much the same thing and started crying, despite the tears she loved it)I also enjoyed this very much.
