Dedicated to Marge Tindal My mother held me in her arms all night, To keep me warm and shield me from my fright. The soldiers all around us seem so cruel And we are helpless underneath their rule. They forced us from our homes without a thing. No clothes or food, nor blanket, could we bring. Now every day we walk, while they all ride. They hope to grind us down and break our pride. But we are Cherokee! Though we meet death, We believe in who we are with our last breath. We wonder if this trail will someday end And if our broken hearts will ever mend. But meantime, we leave graves along the way, Though never given time to stop and pray. Yet they will be remembered, one and all And in our minds, we mark just where they fall. So someday, when this time of tears is done And we are finally free beneath the sun, We'll mark each spot with monuments to show What happened, so the world will always know! Betty Lou Hebert |

BettyLou~ Your movement into the circle of Cherokee history, fills my heart with gladness. You are embraced ... by the spirits and by this heart. Your awareness is of magnitude ... and your kindness of good heart. I so appreciate you. ~*Willow White Feather*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ |

Dear Marge: Thank you for finding this poem and for your wonderful comments. The more I learn about the Cherokee, the more I want to know. Your Cherokee name is so lovely! Betty Lou Hebert |

Very well thought out and very unique. If I am not mistaken, this is along the Cherokee's "Trail of Tears" when they were forced from their homelands about 100 or more years ago. Good work, and I hope to see more. Death is not extinguishing the light; |
