The Dawn

I walked along the dock today
And watched a ship sail in the bay.
Her name I barely could discern,
In faded letters on her stern.
Then later on, I stood beside
The place she moored, upon the tide.
The captain hailed me with a shout.
He said to come and look about.

I climbed aboard and went below.
I listened to the water flow
Along her side.It seemed to tell
Of strange adventures that befell
This ship, The Dawn.The atmosphere
Was such that I could almost hear
The voices from another time.
I thought I heard the ship's bell chime.

Then suddenly, my mind was seized
And visions took me where they pleased.
I saw the tropic islands where
The girls twine flowers in their hair
Sandy beaches and blue lagoons.
The trade winds whispering sweet tunes.
But other landfalls called to me
And back upon the restless sea,
I sailed again and yet once more,
To reach a far, exotic shore.

Her hull is haunted by the past
And when I went on deck at last,
The present seemed bizarre, unreal.
Old tides and curents I could feel
And even when that mood was gone,
I felt I'd sailed, upon The Dawn!

Nancy:  Thanks for your nice comments.  The Dawn was a ship I went on board in Seattle, a long time ago and it really fired up my imagination.

Wow, Betty Lou!!

This was a fabulous piece of writing with the most marvellous imagery.  No wonder this masterpiece was published, so well deserved.  I felt like I was sailing right there with you.

Take care......Sue

(smiles) Awwwwwwwww, this is sooooooo gorgeous, sweet friend, this had me imagining all the village people and girls with flowers in their hair and fathers and sons sending out coconut telegraphs, just like a Jimmy Buffett song! (kiss on cheek) God Bless You, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Betty, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!
