There are no heros anymore he spat, with defiance glowing in his eye, they’re fantasies of your misspent youth, a luxury that we now deny, forget those ten cent comic books, the plaques in centerfield, the statues rusting in the parks, they were ghosts and never real, here is the only hero now he said, waving wads of money in my face, do you think the babe or joltin’ Joe, could ever really take it’s place, he turned hastily, moving swiftly off, dismissing me with deep distain, perhaps he’s right I whispered then, am I a fool who dreams in vain, but what of those that suffer much, yet smile in spite of searing pain, and those that offer helping hands, with nothing thought of selfish gain, he’s wrong I uttered quite aloud, a knowing smile upon my face, they’re everywhere if you but look, they serve with loving silent grace, though they may fade to memory, as great heros always do, they pass the torch before they go, to people just like you. the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost |

Absolutely true, and beautifully written, too. It is hard to find an adequate response to people whose words suggest they value money over emotional bonding with other souls. Thanks for a wonderful response. |

So glad to see you back and this is a wonderful poem. I'm hoping the boorish, boasting heroes never out number the strong silent ones. Joyce |

I guess everyone has the chance to be a hero. Nice message. You don't have a choice to die but you do have a choice how you meet it. |

A true act of bravery is when a person over comes their fear and does what has to be done.Acts of bravery and cowardness occur all the time as we live our lifes.Yes heros do exsist but their storys are never told. paladin |

The heroes are there - doing what needs to be done, quietly, without fanfare, often overlooked because our attention is focused on the pretenders who demand center stage for their act. I like your poem very much. |

"though they may fade to memory, as great heros always do, they pass the torch before they go, to people just like you." And to people like you Peagus. I know I know..a bump up for another backpage poem, but this is a true inspiration and a reminder that there are everyday hero's if we just pay attention. BWA |

but what of those that suffer much, yet smile in spite of searing pain, and those that offer helping hands, with nothing thought of selfish gain, Where would we honestly be without our heroes? Without the people who put our lives in front of theirs? Without police? Without the armed forces? Without firefighters? This poem really made me think about these questions. Death is not extinguishing the light; |
