Until Next Year

It's such a melancholy day.
The colored leaves that cast away
From autumn trees, sail slowly by,
To scatter on the lawn nearby.
No birds are singing and no bees
Are busy in the shrubberies.
The breeze is sharp and lets me know
We'll soon be buried under snow.

I walk along the lake and find
Odds and ends now left behind,
By people who were camping here.
I come across the print of deer
Who came and drank just recently
And by the size and depth I see
It was a buck.  I wish him well
When hunting season sounds it's knell.

Then walking on, I spy a note
Scratched in the sand, that someone wrote.
"Goodbye" it said, "Until next year!"
I don't know why it brought a tear,
But I am loathe to see the end
Of Indian Summer's perfect blend,
With balmy days and sunsets flair
Displaying color, everywhere!

I look around and I'm alone.
This peaceful place that I have known
In every season, now seems to
Wait for me to pass on through.
A chickadee sings loud and clear
And adds a sudden note of cheer.
It's time for me to leave and I
Say, like the note, "Goodbye, Goodbye!"

(big hugggsssssss) That is also the thing that saddens me about autumn; flowers wither away and so much of nature goes into hibernation and though I love the colors, it seems almost like a season of fading in things! (sigh) Fear not, though despite a cold winter, spring will come again soon enough, God Bless You, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Betty, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

Lovely, lovely poem.  It is sad but there is always another season with its own charms.  We have had a wonderful summer and long warm fall. Today is blustery, but somehow I am enjoying it.  Love, Joyce

This was beautiful!! It's just going to sleep for a while to replenish itself. Such a forlorn feel. Lovely write.

Noah:  Thanks for that beautiful picture! I haven't learned how to attach pictures to my poems and I really should find out how it's done.

I love autumn but it does make me feel sad too.  For the same reasons you have mentioned I'm sure.  Once it starts to snow, I get over it!

Thanks for your response.

Joyce:  It's been blustery here today too and so much cooler than we've had.  I am trying to get all the outside work done before the snow comes.  It is already down to around 4,000 ft. over here. Thanks for your comments.

Connie:  Thanks so much for taking care of our summer! You could siphon off a little of the heat before sending it back though!
Thanks for reading and enjoyed your remarks.

Oh, Betty Lou

Your words were breathtaking and I felt like I was walking along with you.  I am not surprised that this one was published.  You have a wonderful ability to bring the reader to wherever you are.

Take care........Sue
