You never played football with me You had a "bone in your leg" you see And although my big brother, or sisters would do I really wanted to play with you But you never played football With me I understand Now How tired you were For you worked yourself to the bone And then I came along So late in your life I expect you grew tired of my moans You deserved a good rest You needed it too I know you'd have played If you could But I bet that to lay On the sand All the day In the dunes By the sea Felt so good We all had such fun In the sand And the sun Eating picnics For dinner And tea We waited for hours For "ten minutes" to pass After eating our sandwiches And cakes in the grass Then a mad dash on shingle With bare feet flying To see who was first to get wet A race to the sandbanks A walk on the beach And "It can't be time to go yet!" So, Dad If you're listening Don't think me unkind For I loved our weekends by the sea It's just That they would have been truly complete If you'd only Played football With me Love is like the measles.....the older you are, the harder it hits you! |

This is a very good poem. I am glad that you have some happy memories. There always seems to be "just one thing" that means so very much to us and no one else can see it...until the time is too late for it to matter. Remember the good times and tuck this one little hurt away.(unless your dad is still there and able to play...even a little. If he is...show him this poem.) I felt your smiles and your sadness and your need. Good read here.Emotional and thought provoking. Hugs to you! MagnoliaBlue |

Hi notlikely2 I liked this one. Although you seem a little sad, I get the sense of a very happy childhood coming through between the lines. Cherish all of those memories and let us have some of the happy ones too! |

Enjoyed reading this...its seems like overall your dad was there for you and yet you still had a longing for him to play football with you...makes me wonder about my sons...are there some things they wish I had done with them. Went to the park recently with some friends for a barbeque and one of my friends daughters wanted me to kick the ball with her and of course I did and he played also but it seems like a small thing to us but to children it is very important that the parent joins them for these games. Thank you James. It's interesting how one's own words can come back at you sometimes. Recently, my daughter was at my house, and was asking me to hurry up getting the grass mowed so that I could pick flowers with her. To be honest, it began to annoy me, but then I thought of this poem, and realised that for a moment I had got my priorities all wrong. I'm glad you liked this poem...it means a lot to me. Love is like the measles.....the older you are, the harder it hits you! |
